The IOTA Foundation, based in Berlin, recently launched a new platform in partnership with Musika Peripherika to simplify music intellectual property rights (IPR) management. The innovative prototype utilizes distributed ledger technology (DLT), smart contracts, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to track music usage, manage IPRs, and automate royalty payments. This initiative aims to address the challenges in the music industry related to payment transparency, rights management, and royalty distribution.

The complexity of rights structures, diverse contracts, and multiple parties involved in the music industry often lead to inefficiencies and delays in royalty distribution. To overcome these challenges, IOTA’s prototype for managing IPRs leverages advanced technologies such as IOTA Smart Contracts (“ISC Chains”), Digital Identity Wallet, and NFTs. By automating royalty payments and contracts, the platform offers a more transparent and efficient way of managing intellectual property rights in the music industry.

In addition to utilizing cutting-edge blockchain technology, the prototype also incorporates the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) to securely store contract information in a decentralized manner. This ensures data integrity and resilience, as the information is distributed across multiple computers, reducing the risk of data loss or tampering. Furthermore, the platform implements decentralized digital identities (DIDs) to ensure that only authorized individuals can access the system, enhancing security and privacy.

In the upcoming months, IOTA plans to integrate with the Open Rights Data Exchange to enhance data management on its IPR marketplace and improve the tracking and verification of intellectual property. The foundation also aims to enhance smart contracts to enable dynamic responses to real-world events, increasing contract flexibility. Additionally, IOTA plans to support a broader range of creative works and industries, while refining the user interface for a more intuitive user experience.

Through the European Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement, the European Union is investing in research and development of next-generation blockchain solutions that comply with stringent EU regulations. The project builds on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), which aims to deliver EU-wide cross-border public services using blockchain technology with high standards of security and privacy. In 2023, the European Commission selected the IOTA Foundation to develop and test prototypes for Digital Product Passports and IPR cross-border management successfully, paving the way for deployment within the IOTA ecosystem and its partners.
