Staycations have become a popular trend in the tourism industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when travel restrictions were in place. In Qatar, staycations have also gained traction, with more people choosing to spend their summer holidays exploring local attractions rather than going abroad. Khaled Lakmoush, General Manager at Al Muftah Travels, noted that fewer people have traveled abroad this summer, thanks to the developed tourism infrastructure and facilities in Qatar, which offer a variety of options for families to enjoy museums, beaches, luxury resorts, and local cultural attractions.

Some of the popular staycation spots in Qatar include Souq Waqif, Aspire Park, Katara Cultural Village, Lusail, luxurious malls, Desert Falls, Meryal Waterpark, and West Walk. These places offer a mix of cultural experiences, outdoor activities, shopping opportunities, and relaxation options for visitors of all ages. Staycationers in Qatar enjoy the convenience of saving money while still experiencing local cultures, heritage, and attractions, which can have a positive impact on mental health by promoting relaxation in familiar surroundings.

Ali Thabet, a tourism marketing expert and consultant, highlighted the tremendous growth of Qatar’s tourism industry in recent years as a factor that attracts families to stay in the country for their holidays. With the availability of air-conditioned open spaces like Katara, West Walk, and Al Hazm Mall, families can enjoy their leisure time outside their homes even during the hot summer days. Souq Waqif remains a favourite destination for visitors throughout the year, offering a variety of dining, shopping, and cultural experiences.

The staycation trend in Qatar has prompted initiatives like the ‘Your Key To Luxury’ campaign launched by Katara Hospitality, which offers guests discounts on room rates, restaurants, and spa services at 14 distinguished destinations in Qatar. Somerset West Bay Doha, one of the participating properties, provides families with a ‘home away from home’ experience, allowing guests to relax at the pool or on the beach, enjoy water-based activities, and unwind in spacious apartments with dining and living spaces. Preferred places among staycationers include Al Bidda Park, Oxygen Park, Katara Cultural Village, shopping malls, museums, and natural attractions like Doha Sands Beach, Purple Island, Panda House, and Al Zubarah Archaeological Site.

Prem Kumar, a tourism and travel expert, and General Manager, Somerset West Bay Doha, highlighted the wide range of resorts, hotels, and apartment hotels in Qatar catering to residents looking to enjoy their leisure time. The demand for staycation options in Qatar has grown significantly, driven by the variety of attractions and experiences available for visitors of all ages. The Visitor Qatar website provides information about tourist places, museums, cultural landmarks, and events happening throughout the year, making it easier for staycationers to plan their local getaways and explore the best of what Qatar has to offer.
