His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, recently delivered a powerful speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In his speech, he emphasized the need for comprehensive reform of international institutions in order to address the growing geopolitical challenges facing the global community. Reflecting on the establishment of the UN after World War II, HRH Prince Salman highlighted the organization’s pivotal role in maintaining global stability. However, he also pointed out that the world is now facing more complex and unpredictable challenges, including environmental crises, health threats, and conflicts that pose a threat to international peace and security.

During his speech, HRH Prince Salman touched upon the pressing challenges that the world is currently facing, such as poverty, famine, deadly infectious diseases, civil wars, and weapons of mass destruction. He emphasized that these challenges have not only persisted but have intensified over the years. Additionally, he highlighted the emergence of revolutionary new technologies that are reshaping the world as we know it. Furthermore, environmental and health challenges that transcend borders have also multiplied, underscoring the need for global cooperation despite differences in ideology or politics.

HRH Prince Salman went on to address the strain that the international order is currently facing, despite being established 80 years ago. He stressed the importance of reforming the United Nations to align with current geopolitical realities and to ensure that it can continue to uphold the international rules-based order. The Crown Prince and Prime Minister called for holistic, consensus-driven reforms across all decision-making bodies of the UN, including the Security Council. He emphasized the importance of adapting to today’s geopolitical landscape in order to effectively address the challenges of the modern world.

Highlighting ongoing global conflicts, HRH Prince Salman raised concerns about the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have lost their lives. He called for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Additionally, he expressed apprehension about the conflict in Ukraine and rising tensions in the South China Sea, warning that these conflicts pose a threat to global stability. In light of these challenges, he called for extensive reforms at the UN, particularly within the Security Council, to better represent the geopolitical realities of today.

In his speech, HRH Prince Salman underscored the necessity of a united global front to oversee the development of artificial intelligence. He cautioned that unchecked technological advancements could exacerbate global divisions rather than promote peace and prosperity. By calling for international cooperation in governing the development of AI, HRH Prince Salman emphasized the importance of harnessing technology for the collective benefit of humanity. In conclusion, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s speech at the UN General Assembly highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive reform of international institutions to address the complex challenges facing the global community.
