As the summer season kicks off in the UAE, with temperatures soaring close to 50°C, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize their health and safety. The extreme heat and humidity during the summer can pose serious health risks, including dehydration, heatstroke, exhaustion, and skin problems. To stay healthy and safe during this season, it is essential to follow some key tips.

First and foremost, staying hydrated is crucial during the hot summer months. Dr. Carla Slaba, a paediatrics specialist, recommends drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, especially for those engaging in outdoor activities. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even heatstroke. Encouraging family members to drink water regularly and carrying reusable water bottles can help in staying hydrated on the go.

Protecting the skin from harsh sun exposure is imperative. Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapplying every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating, is essential. Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen on often-missed spots like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Wearing hats, sunglasses, and light long-sleeved clothing can provide extra protection from harmful UV rays.

Planning outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, can help avoid health risks associated with extreme heat. Seeking shade or staying in air-conditioned indoor areas when temperatures rise is important. Taking frequent breaks if engaging in physical activities outdoors and wearing light, breathable clothing can also help keep the body cool and safe during the summer.

Incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into the diet is essential for staying hydrated and healthy during the summer. Water-based fruits and vegetables like watermelon, tomatoes, peaches, berries, and cauliflower can help in maintaining hydration levels. Ensuring food safety by washing all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption is crucial to avoid illnesses.

Water safety is paramount, especially when spending time in pools or at the beach. It is important to never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment. Enrolling children in swimming lessons during the summer break and familiarizing oneself with the swimming area for any warning signs or flags indicating unsafe conditions can help ensure water safety.

In conclusion, as the summer heat intensifies in the UAE, prioritizing health and safety measures becomes crucial. By following these essential tips, individuals can stay hydrated, protect their skin, plan activities wisely, maintain a healthy diet, and ensure water safety during the hot weather conditions. Taking proactive steps to safeguard health and well-being can significantly reduce the risks associated with extreme temperatures and humidity during the summer season.
