The recent update in the Muharraq redevelopment project has brought relief to several families facing displacement. Dalal Al Maqhawi, a member of the Muharraq Municipal Council, has been instrumental in advocating for these residents. The Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture has taken a positive step by removing seven properties from the expropriation list, allowing families to remain in their homes. This decision comes after close collaboration between Al Maqhawi and the relevant ministries.
While residents are grateful to stay in their homes, they are hopeful that they will be provided with housing units within the Muharraq development project. Many of their current homes are in poor condition, and they wish to remain in the area they call home. The first phase of the project will see the construction of 300 housing units, with a larger plan to provide 2,000 units in partnership with the private sector. Additionally, the project involves the restoration of 16 heritage buildings along the Pearling Path for tourism and cultural activities.
Al Maqhawi highlighted the plight of families living in deteriorating conditions within the area. One family of four is cramped in a single room and living room in a crumbling house, while an elderly woman also resides in a home that is in dire need of repair. Both families eagerly anticipate securing new housing within the development project. Al Maqhawi’s efforts in advocating for these families have helped ensure that they can continue living in their homes without fear of displacement.
Earlier in the month, Al Maqhawi had raised concerns about the impact of the redevelopment project on residents of the second constituency in Muharraq. An initial list of properties had been issued for valuation and potential expropriation to expand alleyways, create parking spaces, and develop green areas. Through her grassroots actions, Al Maqhawi engaged with residents who were dissatisfied with the compensation offered, especially as it wouldn’t allow them to relocate due to their deep roots in Muharraq.
After forming a WhatsApp group with concerned residents and relaying their issues to the Ministry, Al Maqhawi successfully secured the residents’ right to remain in their homes. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has committed to exploring suitable solutions to ensure these families can continue residing in the area they have called home for so long. Al Maqhawi’s dedication to the well-being of these residents has played a crucial role in ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights are upheld in the redevelopment project.
