A recent clampdown on labour law violations in Bahrain has led to the deportation of 151 workers, following 2,179 inspections carried out by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) from 22 to 28 September 2024. These inspections revealed serious breaches of regulations, resulting in the detention of 40 workers found to be in violation of the law, and triggering immediate legal action against those involved. Violations of both the Labour Market Regulatory Authority Law and the Residency Law were identified during this period.
Throughout the inspection period, the LMRA conducted 2,147 visits to various commercial establishments across all governorates, as well as 32 joint inspection campaigns. Eighteen of these campaigns were held in the Capital Governorate, with four in the Muharraq and Northern Governorates, and six in the Southern Governorate. The operation involved collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, including the General Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Residence, as well as local police directorates and other relevant agencies.
The LMRA emphasized the importance of continued coordination with government entities to strengthen inspection efforts across Bahrain and address any violations that could disrupt the stability and competitiveness of the labour market or threaten the country’s economic and social security. The authority called on community members to support government initiatives against illegal practices in the labour market and irregular employment, encouraging individuals to report any concerns regarding labour market violations. This can be done by completing the electronic form available on the LMRA’s official website, using the national system for suggestions and complaints (Tawasul), or contacting the authority’s call centre at 17506055.
In light of these recent developments, it is evident that the Bahraini government is taking significant steps to combat labour law violations and ensure the protection of workers’ rights in the country. The clampdown on violations and the subsequent deportation of workers found to be in breach of regulations highlight the government’s commitment to upholding the law and maintaining a fair and transparent labour market. By conducting rigorous inspections and joint campaigns across all governorates, the LMRA is sending a strong message that violations will not be tolerated.
With the collaboration of various government entities, including the Ministry of Interior, the LMRA is working towards creating a more secure and stable labour market in Bahrain. By addressing violations promptly and taking legal action against offenders, the authority aims to uphold the integrity of the labour market and protect the rights of both employers and employees. Community involvement is also crucial in this effort, as individuals are encouraged to report any concerns they may have regarding labour market violations, ensuring that illegal practices are promptly addressed and rectified.
Overall, the recent clampdown on labour law violations in Bahrain underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing regulations and maintaining a fair and transparent labour market. Through continued coordination with government entities, rigorous inspections, and community support, the LMRA is working towards creating a more secure and competitive labour market that safeguards the rights of all workers. By taking decisive action against violators and encouraging public involvement, Bahrain is moving towards a more compliant and ethical labour environment that benefits both employees and employers alike.
