UAE Universities Shine in the Times Higher Education World Rankings 2027

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has significantly enhanced its position in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, showcasing nine Emirati universities compared to five in 2021. This remarkable improvement highlights the ongoing development and increased competitiveness of higher education in the UAE on a global scale.

In the 2027 edition, a total of 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions were assessed, indicating an upward trend from 2,191 institutions in the previous ranking. The UAE now ranks 23rd worldwide regarding the representation of its universities in this elite category, according to data from THE.

Leading Universities in the UAE

Khalifa University and the United Arab Emirates University led the Emirati institutions, ranking 235th globally. Following closely are Abu Dhabi University and Sharjah University, placed within the 301-325 category, while Ajman University ranks 376-400 and Al Ain University falls into the 401-450 bracket. Additionally, the American University of Sharjah and Zayed University are listed in the 501-550 category, and Gulf Medical University entered the rankings for the first time, positioned within the 1001-1200 range.

The recent rankings reveal a positive trend for the universities participating in both the 2021 and 2027 editions. Of the eight Emirati universities present in both years, five improved their positions, while six raised their overall scores. This progress coincides with a substantial rise in the number of globally participating universities.

Global Presence and Outstanding Efforts

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, the Acting Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, stated that these positive results reflect the growing presence of UAE universities in international rankings. This success is attributed to the continuous efforts of higher education institutions to enhance academic standards and research capabilities, thereby increasing their global competitiveness. The results signify significant progress and provide valuable insights that will guide the next phase of developing the higher education system.

Al Awar added that there is a focus on building a higher education system that enables students to acquire future skills, enhances impactful research and innovation, and supports collaboration between universities and various economic sectors. He emphasized that continuing to work closely with higher education institutions is crucial to leverage strengths, capitalize on development opportunities, and further enhance the global presence of higher education in the UAE.

Research Quality and International Collaboration

The Times Higher Education assessment demonstrated strong performance for UAE universities, particularly in the categories of research quality and international openness. The average research quality score for the nine listed UAE universities reached 84 out of 100, with an international openness score averaging 92 out of 100.

According to indicators, the UAE’s average score in the international openness category was significantly higher than the global median and the median of the top 200 universities worldwide. All listed UAE universities ranked among the top 400 globally in this metric, with five universities featuring in the top 15. In the area of research quality, the UAE’s performance approached the global median for the top 200 universities, with six out of the nine universities placing in the top 200 for this measure.

Conversely, the findings indicated areas with opportunities for further enhancement, particularly in education quality, research environments, and performance related to the economic sector. Academic reputation holds particular significance in THE’s methodology, accounting for 33% of the overall score in the global university rankings. Therefore, the ministry will continue to collaborate with higher education institutions to boost research capabilities, academic excellence, partnerships with economic sectors, and international presence.

Strong Representation Across Disciplines

UAE universities also demonstrated robust representation across all 11 disciplines featured in the World University Ranking 2027.

The Times Higher Education released the World University Rankings 2027 on September 30, 2026. This ranking evaluates universities with intensive research activities based on various performance indicators covering education, research environments, research quality, and international openness.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research reaffirmed its commitment to working with higher education institutions throughout the UAE to enhance academic quality, research innovation, international partnerships, and alignment with national priorities. This ongoing effort aims to develop a competitive, future-ready higher education system that is globally connected.

Looking Ahead

As the UAE continues to improve its global education standing, it is vital to monitor future developments in higher education. The next steps involve deepening international collaborations and refining academic quality. Observers can anticipate further advancements in rankings as more universities strive for excellence and contribute significantly to the UAE’s global educational footprint.
