The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Federal Traffic Council, has launched its fourth quarterly campaign for the year 2026, titled “Safe Road for Our Students.” This initiative aims to enhance traffic safety for school students and raise awareness about proper safety practices during school commutes. The campaign emphasizes the importance of responsibility and adherence to traffic rules to ensure the safety of students and road users.
Campaign Details and Goals
This four-month campaign targets school students, parents, school bus drivers, and supervisors through educational messages and guidance focusing on correct behaviors when using school buses. Key aspects include safe boarding and alighting procedures, as well as safety requirements inside the vehicle and around schools and homes.
The campaign disseminates its educational messages in Arabic, English, and Urdu, accompanied by a media plan utilizing social media platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. This outreach plan collaborates with strategic partners and relevant traffic safety authorities to broaden its audience reach.
Key Messages for Students and Parents
The initiative highlights critical messages for students, such as arriving at the bus stop five minutes before the bus’s scheduled arrival and remaining calm to avoid distracting the driver. Furthermore, students are advised to stay at least ten steps away from the bus immediately after disembarking, promoting safety and minimizing risks associated with approaching moving vehicles.
Additionally, the campaign underscores the important role of bus supervisors in assisting students during boarding and alighting, monitoring attendance, and reporting absences to the appropriate school authorities. These supervisors are also responsible for ensuring discipline among students throughout the journey.
Encouraging Parental Involvement
Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to bus stops and to maintain communication with the school when necessary. They are also reminded to ensure that a responsible individual is available to receive the child upon arrival or at the school gate. This collaborative approach fosters a stronger connection between families, schools, and the school transportation system to safeguard students.
Furthermore, school administrations are called upon to establish safe pickup and drop-off zones and to address any concerns related to school bus journeys. Continuous coordination with parents and reporting unexcused absences or students not boarding the bus are also part of their responsibilities.
Responsibilities of School Bus Drivers
The campaign emphasizes the job of school bus drivers in conducting daily inspections of their vehicles to ensure they are fit for transporting students. Drivers are instructed to halt at safe locations and refrain from moving the bus until all students have either boarded or alighted. Collaborating with supervisors ensures that students sit in their assigned seats and fasten their seatbelts, contributing to overall safety.
Additionally, drivers are reminded to activate the stop signal when the bus is stationary to allow students to board or alight safely. Vehicle operators are obligated to completely halt in both directions when the stop arm is engaged. As stipulated by Article 91 of traffic regulations, violations can result in fines of 1,000 AED along with ten traffic points, while Article 90 states that failure to activate the sign incurs a 500 AED fine and six traffic points for bus drivers.
