Dubai Health System Achieves JCI Accreditation

The Dubai Health System has proudly announced its accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) across its integrated academic health system. This significant achievement underscores its commitment to implementing the highest standards in healthcare quality for both institutional and academic settings, enhancing the overall patient experience.

As the first comprehensive academic health system in the United Arab Emirates to earn this international accreditation, the Dubai Health System underwent a meticulous evaluation by the JCI. This evaluation encompassed central administrations and examined 149 criteria, achieving a remarkable compliance rate of 100%. Additionally, an impressive 99.7% compliance was recorded across 1,170 standards covering medical education and hospitals.

International Standards and Comprehensive Evaluation

This accreditation milestone followed an extensive assessment that included a variety of international standards. These standards evaluated quality, performance improvement, governance, and institutional leadership. The assessment also addressed academic criteria and hospital standards, emphasizing patient-centered care, patient safety, and professional development in medical education. This holistic approach reflects the maturity of Dubai’s healthcare system and its dedication to integrating healthcare services, medical education, and scientific research.

This is the first time the five hospitals under the Dubai Health System—Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital, Hatta Hospital, Latifa Hospital, and Al Jalila Children’s Hospital—have undergone the JCI accreditation survey for Academic Medical Center (AMC) standards, successfully obtaining accreditation without any noted deficiencies.

Gold Seal of Approval

The Joint Commission International is recognized as the largest health care accreditor in the world, with its gold seal of accreditation representing a globally acknowledged standard. This accreditation process is regarded as one of the most comprehensive evaluations in the healthcare sector. The JCI’s standards are designed to unify healthcare practices among various health facilities, ensuring a safe environment that minimizes risks for both patients and healthcare providers. Furthermore, this accreditation fosters ongoing improvement within the integrated academic health system, ultimately enhancing the patient experience.

Dr. Amer Sharif, Executive Director of Dubai Health System and Dean of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, expressed pride in the organization’s achievement. He stated, “We take pride in obtaining JCI accreditation at both institutional and academic levels, being the first integrated academic health system in the UAE to achieve this recognition. This exemplifies our commitment to applying the highest standards and fostering a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement across all facilities and services, contributing to enhanced healthcare outcomes and patient experiences.”

Strengthening Medical Education and Healthcare Integration

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health System, elaborated on the significance of this achievement. She commented, “Our JCI accreditation reflects the strong integration between medical education and healthcare. It highlights the quality of our educational and training programs, as well as our academic model that connects learning with practical application and scientific research, supporting the development of clinical practices according to the highest standards. This global recognition underscores the essential role of academic institutions in bolstering the healthcare system with competencies that contribute to superior healthcare delivery.”

Future Directions and Continued Commitment

Dr. Intisar Al Hammadi, Head of Patient Safety and Quality at Dubai Health System, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to obtaining key international accreditations recognized globally. She stated, “At Dubai Health System, we are dedicated to applying the highest standards across all institutional, academic, and clinical dimensions, ensuring continuous performance enhancement and readiness of our health system according to best global practices.”

Looking ahead, this accreditation opens doors for further advancements in healthcare practices and academic integration. As Dubai Health System continues to build on its achievements, stakeholders and the community can expect to see ongoing improvements in healthcare delivery and educational excellence. The commitment to quality and safety remains a cornerstone of their mission as they aim to enhance the overall health and wellbeing of the population.
