Strengthening UAE-Canada Relations Through Strategic Discussions

Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, held official talks with Mark Carney, Canada’s Prime Minister, today. The discussions focused on the trajectory of UAE-Canada relations and ways to enhance collaboration in various fields of mutual interest. This meeting took place during Sheikh Khalid’s official visit to Canada, highlighting the importance of strengthening bilateral ties.

Upon his arrival at the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney welcomed Sheikh Khalid and acknowledged the robust relationship between Canada and the UAE. He expressed Canada’s commitment to expanding current cooperation and developing partnerships in sectors that support both nations’ developmental and economic priorities.

Key Areas for Collaboration Discussed

The two leaders exchanged greetings and well-wishes on behalf of their respective nations. Sheikh Khalid conveyed the regards of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to Carney, emphasizing mutual hopes for prosperity. Discussions included opportunities for enhancing cooperation and developing economic and investment partnerships tailored to meet both nations’ ambitions.

Significantly, the session emphasized collaboration in trade, investment, artificial intelligence, advanced technology, defense, clean energy, mining, logistics, aviation, space, and food security. Sheikh Khalid reiterated the UAE’s determination to continue strengthening its relationship with Canada through long-term strategic partnerships that align with both countries’ developmental goals.

Further dialogue focused on enhancing connections between business communities and promoting mutual investments, which are essential for stimulating economic growth and development. Both leaders recognized the benefits of fostering communication between relevant institutions to develop impactful joint initiatives.

New Agreements Mark a Milestone in UAE-Canada Partnerships

Following their discussions, Sheikh Khalid and Prime Minister Carney witnessed the signing of three agreements and memoranda of understanding, including a comprehensive economic partnership agreement. This landmark agreement is intended to expand cooperation and strengthen partnerships in priority sectors, encompassing defense, renewable energy, and diplomatic training.

Additionally, the visit announced ongoing negotiations by Emirati companies with their Canadian counterparts for commercial and investment opportunities valued at approximately CAD 21.1 billion (USD 15 billion). This negotiation falls under a broader investment working document worth CAD 70 billion (USD 50 billion), introduced by Prime Minister Carney during his visit to the UAE in November 2025.

The discussions categorized into four strategic sectors—mining, logistics services, energy, and investment in sovereign wealth funds—demonstrate significant progress in realizing a robust investment framework. These collaborations aim to translate shared ambitions into tangible partnerships that promote sustainable economic growth and enhance trade relations over the long term.

Future Prospects of UAE-Canada Relations

The meeting was attended by notable officials, including Sheikh Khalifa bin Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, several UAE ministers, and prominent representatives from Canada. Such gatherings underscore the pivotal role of diplomatic talks in fortifying bilateral relations and strategizing future cooperation.

Looking forward, the UAE and Canada are expected to continue their collaborative efforts to enhance economic ties and explore joint ventures. Observers and stakeholders are advised to keep an eye on forthcoming developments as both nations work to fulfill their mutual aspirations, paving the way for enriched diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges.
