Saudi Arabian Team Competes in International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad
The Saudi national team for astronomy and astrophysics is set to participate in the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA 2026) in Hanoi, Vietnam, from September 25 to October 5. This prestigious event will see students from over 60 countries showcase their skills and knowledge.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be represented by five students who have gone through rigorous training programs organized by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as “Mawhiba,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and under the sponsorship of the Education Development Holding Company.
Student Preparation and Selection Process
The Saudi team consists of Fatima Nazih Damlakh, Hisham Ayman Rafiq, Omar Khaled Al-Shahri, Eileen Hani Azhari, and Maram Abdulaziz Al-Barak. These students underwent a comprehensive preparation process that began with the National Talent Olympiad, followed by the physics track of Mawhiba’s international Olympiad program. Training camps and workshops spanning two to three years were organized to ensure that the students were adequately prepared for the competition.
The selection process included a series of qualifying tests to choose the top five students who would represent Saudi Arabia. This structured approach aims to not only nurture talent but also ensure that students are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in the field of astronomy and astrophysics.

Saudi Arabia’s participation in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics dates back to 2024. In its previous two participations, the kingdom has already made its mark with a total of six international awards, including one silver medal, three bronze medals, and two certificates of merit.
