Khaliji Cup 27 Set to Launch in Jeddah
The Gulf Cooperation Council Football Federation Secretary-General, Jassim Al-Rumaihi, announced that all preparations for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, also known as Khaliji 27, are complete. The tournament will kick off tomorrow, Wednesday, in the city of Jeddah, with an opening ceremony ready to take place along with the matches.
During a press conference held today in Jeddah, attended by the Secretary-General of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, Majed Al-Sahib, Al-Rumaihi confirmed that the Gulf Football Federation has been in contact with all Gulf channels regarding broadcast rights. As of the time of the conference, only three channels have purchased the rights: Qatari sports channel Al-Kass, Oman Sports Channel, and the Shasha platform. He assured that other sports channels still have the opportunity to acquire broadcasting rights for the tournament.
Broadcast Rights and Ticket Availability
Al-Rumaihi clarified that the cost of broadcasting rights remains unchanged compared to the previous edition held in Kuwait. “There is no increase in fees for broadcast rights; they are the same as the requirements for Khaliji 26,” he stated. He expressed hope that other channels would follow the lead of those that have already purchased the rights, emphasizing the federation’s commitment to making the tournament accessible to as many fans as possible.
Regarding ticket sales, Al-Rumaihi revealed the federation’s collaboration with Gulf federations to encourage attendance and promote ticket purchases. He noted that initial attendance at tournament openings is typically lower than expected but expressed confidence in Jeddah’s fans, describing the city as one well-known for its passion for football and vibrant support.
Pricing of Tickets and Event Coverage
The Gulf Football Federation coordinated with the organizing committee to finalize ticket prices after thorough discussions. According to Al-Rumaihi, the established prices are comparable to those of Asian tournaments, deeming them appropriate for an event of this magnitude.
He also shared that nearly 600 media representatives have registered to cover the competition in Jeddah. Additionally, he announced that the next host city for the following Gulf Cup will be revealed during the federation’s meeting scheduled for September 28.
Future Prospects for the Gulf Cup
Al-Rumaihi addressed the possibility of evolving the tournament’s format and expanding participation in the future. He indicated that all options remain open, especially as the upcoming Gulf Youth Cup U-17 will see teams from outside the Gulf region, including Egypt, Morocco, and China, participating alongside Gulf teams. He confirmed that the men’s tournament would maintain its exclusivity in accordance with the federation’s direction, although future changes could be considered.
The Khaliji 27 tournament begins tomorrow, featuring eight teams competing for the title through a total of 15 matches. The championship will extend until October 6, with all matches taking place at King Abdullah Sports City and Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City in Jeddah.
