Oil Prices Rise Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Tensions
Oil prices experienced a slight increase today as geopolitical risks in the Middle East continue to cast a shadow over the market. The fear surrounding security issues has bolstered risk premiums, despite robust crude oil exports from the region and the G7’s drawdown from emergency stocks that have somewhat eased supply concerns.
Brent crude futures rose by 27 cents, or 0.3%, reaching $100.59 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures increased by 30 cents, also a 0.3% rise, settling at $89.73 per barrel.
Impact of Transportation and Insurance Costs on Oil Supply
According to Priyanka Sachdeva, Head of Market Research at a global institution, shipping data indicates that crude oil exports from the region have surpassed pre-war levels on several occasions in late September. Alternative routes and logistical adjustments have allowed producers to maintain supply flows despite disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.
However, she cautioned that it is premature to view this as a complete return to normal supply conditions. Attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified, with an increase in incidents reported in recent days. This suggests that while oil shipments continue, costs related to transport and insurance, as well as shipping routes, remain high due to ongoing security risks.
Increase in Gulf Oil Flows and G7 Response
Recent data shows that oil flows from the Gulf region, excluding Iran, have surged to over 81% of pre-war levels in September, bolstered by a recovery in Saudi exports. In contrast, Iranian exports have been reduced to zero due to ongoing U.S. sanctions.
To further alleviate supply concerns, G7 countries agreed on Friday to withdraw 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from emergency reserves, pledging to refrain from imposing energy export restrictions following pressure from U.S. officials.
