Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons
The I حسن Association, based in the Interior Governorate of Oman, is preparing a diverse array of events to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons throughout October. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of older individuals in society, educate the public on their rights and needs, and enhance their participation in community life.
The program includes a mixture of seminars, discussions, cultural awareness activities, and recreational events that will take place across several states within the governorate. Both governmental and private institutions, along with civil society organizations, are collaborating in this effort, alongside the younger generations.
Program Outline and Objectives
The events mark an essential preparation by the I حسن Association for the celebration of this important occasion. Final preparations for the various activities are underway, with responsibilities being delegated to ensure the successful execution of the program across different states in line with established goals.
One of the flagship activities is the seminar titled “Safety for the Elderly,” which will occur in the Wilayats of Samail and Bidbid. This event, conducted in partnership with relevant authorities responsible for senior citizens, focuses on informing attendees about the critical aspects of safety, needs, and ways to create a more secure environment for older people.
In addition, the association is implementing activities in the Wilayats of Al Hamra and Bahla that target school students and community members. These initiatives aim to foster awareness of the importance of caring for elderly individuals and instilling the values of respect and appreciation for their contributions. It also encourages younger generations to engage with older adults, learning from their rich life experiences.
Community Engagement and Interaction
In Nizwa, a series of recreational, cultural, and educational activities are being organized that bring the elderly together with community members. This creates opportunities for older individuals to participate in community events and benefit from accompanying programs, promoting intergenerational interaction.
The month of activities will conclude at the Oman Through Time Museum, featuring contributions from various supportive entities and the community, culminating a series of programs conducted across the Interior Governorate.
Focus on Elderly Rights and Quality of Life
Saeed bin Abdullah Al-Rashdi, head of the organizing committee for the International Day of Older Persons events, emphasized that this year’s celebration aims to convey a deeper message regarding the importance of older adults. Various programs and activities, executed with the involvement of youth and civil society organizations, reflect this commitment.
He noted that the program involves collaboration with schools to enhance awareness of the association’s role in supporting older adults and promoting a culture of respect. Additionally, a seminar focused on elderly issues will be organized, along with events related to “Omani identity,” and a survey will be launched to assess the quality of services provided to older adults while gauging their satisfaction and needs.
Encouraging Volunteerism and Community Support
Al-Rashdi mentioned that the program aligns with the I حسن Association’s broader objective of expanding community partnerships for the benefit of older individuals. This initiative aims to shift the focus from merely providing care to empowering older adults through active participation, preserving their dignity and allowing younger generations to learn from their wisdom.
He urged volunteers to continue their sincere and dedicated efforts, recognizing the significance of their mission in elevating the status of older individuals within society and embodying values of loyalty, compassion, and mutual support.
