The inaugural Forum for Arab Women Researchers commenced on Sunday in Al Buraimi Governorate, Oman, marking a significant step towards bolstering Arab women in research and innovation. Titled “Arab Women Researchers Towards the Future: Inspiring Experiences and Profound Insights,” the two-day event brought together leading female scientists, academics, and policymakers to discuss challenges, share expertise, and chart a course for greater participation and leadership in the scientific community. This forum underscores a growing commitment to empowering women as vital contributors to sustainable development and a knowledge-based economy.

Oman Hosts Landmark Forum for Arab Women Researchers

Under the slogan “Sharing Expertise is Our Path to Excellence,” the forum was officially inaugurated by Dr. Rahma Ibrahim Al Mahrooqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Dr. Al Mahrooqi emphasized that Oman’s hosting of this pivotal event demonstrates a firm Arab dedication to supporting and empowering women researchers, recognizing them as a cornerstone of scientific progress and sustainable development. She highlighted the substantial and active role Omani and Arab women already play in research, contributing qualitative insights that drive innovation across various sectors.

A Platform for Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange

The Minister further explained that the forum serves as a crucial platform for collaboration and the exchange of expertise among Arab women researchers. The aim is to cultivate knowledgeable societies equipped to compete on a global scale. Attendees include prominent women from diverse scientific and academic specializations, alongside representatives from Arab, regional, and international organizations, federations, and institutions. This diverse participation fosters a rich environment for networking and the development of collaborative research initiatives.

Strategic Partnerships Driving the Forum’s Success

The forum is the result of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the Department of Science and Research at the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and Al Buraimi University. This partnership highlights the shared commitment to advancing scientific research and empowering women across the Arab world.

ALECSO’s Vision for Women in Science

Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, underscored the necessity of women’s participation in development for achieving a sustainable scientific renaissance. He noted the leadership role Arab women have already demonstrated in research and innovation, stating that the Forum for Arab Women Researchers embodies ALECSO’s vision of supporting their presence in the field and implementing the Arab Strategy for Research, Technology and Innovation. This strategy aims to create a more robust and interconnected research ecosystem throughout the region.

Strengthening the Knowledge Force

Dr. Mohammed Sand Abu Darwish, Director of the Department of Science and Research at ALECSO and Chairman of the Scientific Committee, affirmed the organization’s strong commitment to supporting Arab women in STEM. He emphasized their role as a fundamental knowledge force in developing scientific systems. He explained that the forum directly addresses recommendations from the Arab Forum for Scientific Research and Sustainable Development, supporting ALECSO’s integrated vision for promoting Arab cooperation in research and innovation. He also expressed gratitude to Oman and Al Buraimi University for their hospitality and contribution to the forum’s success.

Oman’s Pioneering Role in Empowering Women

Dr. Mahmoud Abdullah Al Abri, Secretary of the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, highlighted the historical role of women in the development of sciences and knowledge. He emphasized that their current role in research and innovation is central to achieving sustainable development. He pointed to Oman’s pioneering model in empowering women through the establishment of research centers, funding programs, and international collaborations, which has led to a significant presence of Omani women researchers in various scientific disciplines.

Al Buraimi University’s Commitment to Innovation

Dr. Said Eid Younis, Vice-Chancellor of Al Buraimi University, affirmed the university’s dedication to supporting research, fostering a stimulating environment for innovation, and strengthening Arab academic partnerships. He noted that the university’s ongoing efforts align with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to build a knowledge-based economy.

Forum Highlights and Future Directions

The first day of the forum featured specialized scientific sessions reviewing the latest research experiences and future visions of Arab women researchers. A key session focused on the current state of Arab research and its potential for development, followed by a dialogue addressing the challenges facing higher education in the Arab world and strategies for advancement. Another session explored the role of Arab identity in shaping cultural and knowledge policies.

The second day will delve into pivotal scientific sessions covering sustainability, the knowledge economy, artificial intelligence applications, and strategies for enhancing research across the Arab world. The forum will conclude with a session showcasing inspiring Arab experiences in health and medical research, culminating in the formulation of actionable recommendations. These recommendations are expected to guide future policies and initiatives aimed at further empowering Arab women in research and driving innovation throughout the region.

The Forum for Arab Women Researchers represents a crucial step towards unlocking the full potential of female scientists and researchers in the Arab world. By fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and addressing key challenges, this event paves the way for a more inclusive and innovative future.
