Emirati culture is the focal point of the 20th Thessaloniki International Book Fair in Greece, with Sharjah as the first Arab Guest of Honour. The Hellenic Foundation for Culture acknowledged Sharjah’s efforts in promoting cultural exchange between the Greek and Arab worlds. Nikos A. Koukis praised Sharjah’s commitment to programs involving Greek writers and creators, highlighting the city’s intellectual significance in the Emirates.

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is represented by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi at the TIBF, emphasizing the city’s status as an intellectual hub in the Arab world. The presence of Sharjah as the guest of honour showcases its dedication to literature and intellectual pursuits. Sheikha Bodour emphasized the importance of reading in fostering intercultural understanding, urging individuals to explore different cultures through literature.

The TIBF features 850 exhibitors, over 1,500 authors, speakers, and book professionals from 40 countries, providing a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration. Sharjah’s engagement at the fair includes releasing Greek translations of 10 books by Emirati authors, spanning various genres such as poetry, prose, arts, and studies. These translations aim to bridge diverse literary traditions and promote cross-cultural dialogue.

Panel discussions at the fair will delve into topics like the influence of Greek philosophy on literature, the significance of women’s narratives, and the evolving landscape of youth literature in the UAE and Greece. By exploring these themes, Sharjah seeks to deepen its ties with the Greek literary community and create opportunities for collaboration. The fair serves as a platform for showcasing Emirati literature and strengthening cultural bonds between the two nations.

Sharjah’s participation at the TIBF underscores its commitment to promoting literary exchange and fostering dialogue between different cultures. As the first Arab city to be honoured at the fair, Sharjah’s presence highlights its cultural significance and contributions to the literary world. Through initiatives like Greek translations of Emirati works and panel discussions on literary topics, Sharjah aims to create bridges between diverse literary traditions and promote mutual understanding.

In a world marked by polarization, Sheikha Bodour emphasizes the importance of reading as a means to explore and appreciate different cultures. By investing in initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue and collaboration, Sharjah is not only showcasing its literary heritage but also actively contributing to the global literary landscape. The city’s participation at the TIBF serves as a testament to its dedication to promoting cultural exchange and fostering mutual respect and understanding.
