Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, recently sparked controversy by calling for the release of far-right activist Tommy Robinson in the UK. Musk made this statement on his social media platform X, where he also criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Minister for Safeguarding, Jess Phillips, over their responses to rape gangs in Rochdale and Oldham. This move by Musk led to questions about the direction X is taking and whether the UK government should distance themselves from the platform.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is a divisive figure in the UK known for promoting racist and Islamophobic views. He founded the English Defence League, which gained attention for organizing protests against immigration and multiculturalism. Robinson is currently serving a sentence for contempt of court, but Musk’s public support for his release has drawn criticism from liberal MPs in the UK who are concerned about the growing influence of extreme viewpoints on social media platforms.

Musk’s criticism of the UK government extends beyond his support for Robinson, as he has also called for fresh elections in the country. He has accused Keir Starmer, who was head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008-2013, of failing to prosecute individuals involved in rape gangs during his tenure. Musk’s controversial posts have reignited the debate over the role of social media in amplifying extremist voices and concerns about foreign interference in domestic politics.

The war of words between Musk and UK politicians shows no sign of abating, with Musk reportedly considering donating to the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage. This aligns Musk with far-right political figures in the UK, further raising eyebrows about his political leanings. The UK government has yet to respond to Musk’s recent posts, but they have previously condemned his inflammatory statements, including his suggestion that civil war is inevitable in Britain.

Musk’s alignment with far-right political parties in Europe has also drawn attention in the US, where he has positioned himself as a key supporter and advisor to President-elect Donald Trump. Trump has appointed Musk as co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency, tasked with overseeing spending cuts and regulations. It remains to be seen how the incoming US administration will respond to Musk’s endorsement of far-right ideologies abroad and whether it will impact his relationship with Trump.
