The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) is spearheading a preservation effort for two historic buildings in Muharraq that are at risk of being demolished or falling into disrepair. With the support of the Muharraq Municipal Council, BACA is proposing to maintain the buildings’ iconic exteriors while updating the interiors for continued use. One of the buildings, located on Road 621, Block 206, has suffered significant damage since August 2019 and is in need of preservation to protect Muharraq’s architectural character. The second building, on Road 310, Block 203, is facing potential demolition, but BACA is advocating for the owner to retain its original appearance to preserve its historic value.

In a formal letter, President of BACA, H.E. Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, has urged the Minister of Municipalities Affairs to support the preservation efforts for these buildings. He emphasized the importance of protecting the buildings’ outward appearance to maintain Muharraq’s unique architectural identity. A working group has been established to coordinate funding and skilled craftsmen to restore and clean the heritage sites, ensuring their longevity for future generations. This collaborative effort includes representatives from municipalities, the local police, the municipal council, the governor’s office, and public health.

The preservation of these historic buildings is essential to “retain the spirit” of Muharraq’s historic areas and reduce risks to lives and properties, according to the authority. Shaikh Khalifa expressed appreciation for the ministry’s support and highlighted the significance of these buildings as symbols of Bahrain’s rich past. By preserving these buildings and their unique architectural features, Muharraq can continue to showcase its heritage and history for generations to come. The working group is dedicated to securing the necessary resources to ensure the successful restoration and preservation of these historic structures.

It is crucial to protect the outward appearance of these historic buildings while allowing for necessary interior updates to ensure their continued use. By striking a balance between preservation and functionality, these buildings can serve as important cultural landmarks in Muharraq. The collaboration between BACA, the municipal council, and other stakeholders demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding Bahrain’s cultural heritage and architectural identity. Preserving these historic buildings not only honors the past but also enriches the present and future of Muharraq and its residents.

The efforts to preserve these historic buildings in Muharraq are part of a broader initiative to protect Bahrain’s cultural heritage and promote sustainable development. By retaining the architectural character of these buildings and ensuring their longevity through restoration and maintenance, Muharraq can continue to be a vibrant hub of culture and history. The support and collaboration of various government and community stakeholders are key to the success of these preservation efforts and the preservation of Bahrain’s rich past for generations to come. Through these efforts, Muharraq can remain a symbol of Bahrain’s cultural heritage and a testament to the importance of preserving the past for future generations.
