Dubai is set to have a vertical farm that will grow a variety of crops such as leafy greens, tomatoes, baby potatoes, rice, and wheat. This innovative farm, located in the desert, is the brainchild of Pure Food Technology, a sustainable agricultural and food technology startup based in the UAE. The farm utilizes artificial intelligence, solar energy, robotics, and patented technology to produce fresh vegetables in a controlled factory setting. Sebastian Carlton, the CEO of Pure Food Technology, highlighted the advantages of this system, particularly in the desert where water resources and sunlight are abundant.

The vertical hydroponic farm in Dubai showcases the potential of hydroponic farming, a method that involves growing crops without soil. Instead, nutrient-rich water solutions are used, allowing plant roots to grow in a deep-water culture. The farm can produce vegetable crops in just 35 days, demonstrating its efficiency in comparison to traditional farming methods. Carlton emphasized the farm’s capability to produce 100 kilograms of vegetables per day, equivalent to 1,000 boxes of mixed salads, showcasing its productivity and potential impact on food production.

Pure Food Technology’s vertical farm is not limited to a single crop and can cultivate a diverse range of produce. The startup is committed to refining its innovative technologies and contributing to the community by distributing fresh produce to labour camps, supporting the welfare of workers in the UAE. By transforming farming practices and focusing on food security, the agricultural startup aims to help the UAE transition from a net importer to a net exporter of plant-based food, promoting self-reliance and sustainability.

The vertical farm’s emphasis on automation and minimal human intervention throughout the farming process underscores its commitment to efficient and precise operations. From planting to packaging, robotics and artificial intelligence play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations. Carlton stressed the importance of investing in new technologies to meet growing food demands as the population increases. This technological breakthrough not only boosts food production but also aligns with the country’s vision of sustainability and renewable energy utilization.

By overcoming the limitations of traditional agriculture practices, such as geographic dependency on water sources and favorable climates, the vertical farm offers a solution to the challenges posed by food demands. Carlton highlighted the versatility of the system, as it can be implemented in any desert location and utilize various types of water sources, including salty water. This flexibility in farming practices opens up new possibilities for agriculture in arid regions and contributes to the UAE’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in food production. The innovative approach of Pure Food Technology represents a significant step towards revolutionizing agriculture and ensuring food security in the region.
