Residents and citizens of the UAE had the opportunity to provide input for the design of a new park in Dubai, located in Nad Al Hamar 3. During a workshop, attendees suggested ideas such as an interactive play area, a method to convert humidity into water for plants, and a shaded cycling track. High school student Noora Abdullah Ashoor described the workshop as a unique experience, mentioning the importance of engaging all five senses of children in the play area.

The workshop was part of the launch of the Dubai Urban Design Platform, which is an AI-powered platform aimed at transforming urban spaces. Attendees focused on preserving the area’s identity while designing the park, proposing the use of Ghaf trees for vegetation and light-colored flooring to prevent heat absorption. The platform offers residents the opportunity to envision how urban spaces can be enhanced and transformed, aligning with Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s directive.

The workshop included over 20 participants of various ages, divided into groups to discuss park features. Ideas generated included solar panels, an animal shelter, a gym, cycling track, padel court, and water fountain. Moderators used Urbanist to demonstrate how these features would look in the park. Ahmed Al Zarouni, Director of the Department of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities at Dubai Municipality, was impressed with the ideas presented and expressed the municipality’s willingness to implement similar projects in all upcoming parks.

Organized by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation, the workshop allowed attendees to explore the Dubai Urban Design Platform’s potential for designing urban spaces. Reimagined areas showcased at the workshop included pocket parks, sustainable squares, urban gardening, sustainable streets, and urban oasis and canals. The platform aims to streamline the urban planning process, reduce costs, and prioritize active participation from city residents in shaping their environment.

The platform’s features and capabilities were showcased at the workshop, allowing attendees to reimagine public squares and urban areas. The technology demonstrates the potential for innovative urban planning solutions and sustainable design concepts. The initiative not only aims to enhance the urban environment but also to involve residents in the decision-making process, ensuring that their input shapes the future development of Dubai’s public spaces.

Dubai Municipality officials attended the workshop to discuss the technical aspects of the proposed ideas, signaling a commitment to incorporating innovative and futuristic features in upcoming park projects. The collaborative effort between government entities and residents reflects a shared commitment to sustainable urban development and community engagement. Overall, the workshop served as a platform for creativity, collaboration, and innovation in designing public spaces that cater to the needs and preferences of Dubai residents.
