Japan has resumed e-visa services for UAE residents, allowing them to apply for the service through VFS Global starting August 1, 2024. The Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai confirmed the news, mentioning VFS as a partner of the embassy and consulate. The consulate has also stated that it will no longer accept visa applications directly from residents, except for diplomatic and official visa applications, and residents are now required to reach out to VFS for all inquiries related to visa applications. Visa application requirements, documentation, booking, opening hours, and processing times have all been listed on VFS Global’s website.

The resumption of e-visa services applies only to residents in Dubai, as those residing in Abu Dhabi still need to apply through the embassy. This development comes as a relief for expats in the UAE, as they can now complete the entire visa process online, from application to payment. The e-visa facility had become popular among residents prior to its suspension on April 27, 2024, pushing the visa process to become tedious for expats planning to travel to Japan. During the suspension period, residents had to email the Dubai consulate for an appointment, causing struggles in securing appointment slots. Emiratis, however, were still able to visit Japan without a visa.

Through the new partnership with VFS, the standard processing period for the e-visa is 8 working days from the time of application, provided that all required documents are submitted. The short-term e-visa allows foreigners to enter Japan for 90 days and is valid for three months from the date of issuance. Eligible countries for the e-visa for tourism include Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the USA.

Overall, the resumption of e-visa services in Japan for UAE residents through VFS Global marks a positive development for expats in the region. The shift to online applications and processing provides a more convenient option for those planning to visit Japan for tourism. With the detailed information and application guidelines available on VFS Global’s website, residents in Dubai can now easily navigate the visa application process. The e-visa facility also opens up more opportunities for travel and exploration in Japan, making it a highly sought-after destination for tourists from various countries. Expats can now look forward to a smoother and more efficient visa application experience, enhancing their travel plans and experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun.
