Bahrain is set to relaunch direct flights to the United States by the end of 2024, as confirmed by US Ambassador to Bahrain Steven C Bondy. This initiative is pending a safety review by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of Bahrain’s civil aviation oversight. The Ambassador expressed confidence in the FAA’s positive feedback following their recent visit to Bahrain. Assuming a successful formal assessment, Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, could potentially start direct flights to the US as early as November or December. This move is expected to significantly boost trade and business opportunities between the two countries.

The resumption of direct flights was discussed during a roundtable event held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Since the FTA came into effect in 2006, bilateral trade between the US and Bahrain has significantly increased, nearly quadrupling in value. While trade volume saw a slight dip in recent years, the overall growth trajectory remains impressive. Ambassador Bondy highlighted the presence of numerous American companies in Bahrain’s tech, defence, and banking sectors, emphasizing the kingdom’s potential for further economic growth. He also noted the attractiveness of Bahrain to American companies due to its well-developed infrastructure.

During the roundtable discussion, the Ambassador mentioned that a major American company has chosen to set up businesses in Bahrain’s newly established trade zone, occupying all available space. This decision aligns with Bahrain’s focus on reclaiming land for business expansion and the government’s directive to attract more foreign investments. Bahrain’s strategic location and ongoing land reclamation projects make it an ideal destination for American companies looking to explore business opportunities in the region. The government’s commitment to technological development further enhances the kingdom’s appeal to potential investors.

Ambassador Bondy also highlighted the challenges posed by regional conflicts and recent attacks on commercial vessels, which ultimately impact costs for consumers. Despite these challenges, Bahrain’s swift recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic positions it well for continued economic success. The country’s resilience in the face of adversity and its commitment to economic growth make it an attractive destination for foreign investors, especially American companies. The Ambassador acknowledged the willingness of American companies to contribute to Bahrain’s technological development and assist in overcoming challenges in this sector.

Overall, the anticipated relaunch of direct flights between Bahrain and the United States signals a promising future for bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The longstanding US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement has laid a solid foundation for the growth of trade between the two nations, with the potential for further expansion in various sectors. As Bahrain continues to focus on technological development and business expansion, American companies are increasingly looking to explore opportunities in the kingdom. By overcoming regional challenges and leveraging its strategic advantages, Bahrain is well-positioned to attract more foreign investments and drive economic growth in the years to come.
