The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is currently accepting applications for a creative writing workshop in Arabic, known as the ‘Screenwriting for Beginners Lab.’ This workshop is designed for aspiring filmmakers who are interested in learning the creative process of writing for the screen. Applicants must be 18 years old or above, and are required to submit an email to [email protected] with various documents such as a short film logline and synopsis, CV or short bio, copy of ID, and a paragraph explaining their interest in the lab.

Scheduled to take place from September 3 to 7, the five-day lab will focus on developing dialogue and storytelling techniques in the Arabic language. Mentors will cover the foundations of screenwriting, including the ‘architecture’ of screenplays such as storytelling, screenplay guidelines, non-verbal storytelling, and characterization, as well as the ‘formatting’ of a screenplay including visual grammar and Celtx/Final Draft.

The lab will be conducted remotely in Arabic, blending online lectures, assignments, and group discussions to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of screenwriting. As this is a beginner’s lab, the goal is for participants to produce a minimum of one scene for their screenplay. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to continue their filmmaking journey with the DFI development team, leading towards further training and grants programs offered by the DFI.

The DFI emphasizes the importance of introducing aspiring filmmakers to the process of writing for the screen through this workshop. The lab aims to equip participants with the necessary skills and techniques required to develop compelling dialogue and storytelling in the Arabic language. By focusing on the ‘architecture’ and ‘formatting’ of screenplays, mentors aim to guide participants towards understanding the fundamental elements of creating a screenplay.

Aspiring filmmakers who participate in the lab will have the opportunity to interact with mentors and engage in group discussions to enhance their understanding of screenwriting. The workshop will provide a structured learning environment in which participants can learn from experienced professionals in the film industry. Through a combination of online lectures, assignments, and group discussions, participants will develop practical skills that will help them produce a scene for a screenplay.

Overall, the ‘Screenwriting for Beginners Lab’ offered by the Doha Film Institute provides aspiring filmmakers with a valuable opportunity to enhance their skills in writing for the screen. By focusing on the creative process of screenwriting and providing guidance on dialogue and storytelling techniques, the workshop aims to inspire participants to pursue a career in filmmaking. Through a blend of online lectures, assignments, and group discussions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of screenwriting and receive guidance on further opportunities within the film industry.
