A delegation from the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community joined a group of nearly 300 religious leaders in Baku ahead of COP29 to address the climate crisis. Led by Kinana Jamaluddin, the delegation participated in the Global Summit of Religious Leaders, which focused on the theme of ‘World Religions for a Green Planet’ under the patronage of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. They highlighted the importance of taking care of the Earth, emphasizing the Qur’anic call to ‘walk softly upon the Earth’ and advocating for harmony with nature.

The summit, which took place from November 5-6, brought together representatives from 55 countries to discuss climate action and interfaith perspectives on environmental issues. The Dawoodi Bohra delegation used the platform to showcase their Project Rise initiatives, which include tree planting, water conservation, and waste management projects. Their participation in the summit not only allowed them to share their community’s efforts in sustainability but also served as a way to collaborate with other religious leaders in addressing global environmental challenges.

One of the significant outcomes of the summit was the adoption of the Baku Declaration, which called for global action against climate change. The declaration highlighted the urgency of the situation and stressed the need for collective efforts to combat the environmental crisis. By participating in the summit and contributing to the adoption of the declaration, the Dawoodi Bohra delegation reaffirmed their commitment to environmental stewardship and their dedication to working with others to protect the planet for future generations.

The Dawoodi Bohra community has been actively involved in environmental initiatives through Project Rise, which aims to promote sustainability and address climate change issues. By participating in the Global Summit of Religious Leaders in Baku, the community was able to showcase their efforts and demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship. The delegation’s presence at the summit underscored the importance of interfaith collaboration in addressing global challenges and highlighted the role that religious communities can play in advocating for environmental protection and sustainability.

Overall, the participation of the Dawoodi Bohra delegation in the Global Summit of Religious Leaders was instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of environmental protection and sustainability. By sharing their initiatives and joining forces with other religious leaders, the delegation reinforced the message of unity and collective action in addressing climate change. The adoption of the Baku Declaration further solidified their resolve to work towards a greener and more sustainable future, emphasizing the vital role that religious communities can play in advocating for environmental responsibility and stewardship.
