Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah recently met with officials in Azerbaijan to discuss cooperation in enhancing efforts related to women’s rights and preventing gender-based violence. During her meetings in Baku with Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs H E Bahar Muradova, and Commissioner for Human Rights Sabina Aliyeva, H E Al Attiyah highlighted the importance of international advocacy for women’s rights and supporting programs to prevent gender-based violence.

In her meeting with Commissioner Aliyeva, H E Al Attiyah emphasized Qatar’s support for resolutions and declarations related to women’s rights and promoting its experiences in this area. She expressed Qatar’s willingness to cooperate with Azerbaijan on various levels to protect the rights of women and children, particularly in conflict zones and areas affected by climate change. She also discussed the possibilities of organizing seminars and awareness-raising events on human rights topics in both Doha and Azerbaijan, sharing expertise on women’s and children’s rights.

The Chairperson of NHRC explained the measures taken by Qatar to promote the role of women in society, including ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and collaborating with international organizations on women’s rights issues. She highlighted the establishment of the National Committee for the Affairs of Women, Children, the Elderly, and People with Disabilities, demonstrating Qatar’s commitment to protecting and promoting human rights within the country.

In addition to discussing women’s rights, H E Al Attiyah also explored partnership opportunities with the Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan on receiving and studying complaints from individuals, conducting field trips, and sharing expertise on human rights measures and mechanisms. The discussions aimed at strengthening the international human rights system and activating the role of national institutions at various levels to protect and promote human rights in Azerbaijan and beyond.

Overall, the meetings in Baku between H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah and Azerbaijani officials focused on collaboration and sharing experiences to advance women’s rights, prevent gender-based violence, and enhance international human rights standards. The discussions underscored the importance of cooperation between countries to protect the vulnerable segments of society, such as women and children, and to address the challenges facing human rights in different territories around the world. By exchanging expertise and best practices, both Qatar and Azerbaijan aim to strengthen their efforts in promoting and protecting human rights at the national, regional, and global levels.
