In a recent report by Zahra Ayaz for The Daily Tribune, Dr. Peter Jankovics, a top Berkshire Hathaway food security expert, has emphasized the importance of Bahrain following Angola’s model to achieve food security. Jankovics suggested that Bahrain could benefit from providing farmers with seeds and tools while buying their produce, which would ultimately create job opportunities and promote development within the country.

Despite the growing need for food security, Bahrain has not yet prioritized the development of a strong domestic food production sector. Experts caution against following paths that do not prioritize local food production, as investing in this area could enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and provide the population with access to high-quality, affordable food options. Dr. Peter Jankovics believes that Bahrain can follow the example set by Angola by providing seeds and tools to farmers to boost production and create job opportunities within the country.

Currently, over 90 percent of Bahrain’s food supply comes from other countries, a situation that Dr. Jankovics describes as a huge problem. He highlights the urgent need for the Gulf region to address this issue, especially with the population expected to double in seven years. Jankovics warns against relying on cheap imports for food security, as this could have negative health consequences for the population in the long term.

To address these challenges, Dr. Jankovics suggests that Bahrain could form partnerships with companies like the Carrinho Group, which is Angola’s largest agricultural company. By collaborating with such companies, Bahrain could strengthen local economies, create job opportunities, and promote sustainable development. The Carrinho Group, for example, produces a variety of agricultural products and has its own processing facilities and shops, as well as exporting their products.

In conclusion, Dr. Peter Jankovics emphasizes the importance of prioritizing domestic food production to achieve food security in Bahrain. By following Angola’s model of providing farmers with seeds and tools, Bahrain can create job opportunities, boost development, and reduce reliance on food imports. Collaborating with companies like the Carrinho Group could further strengthen Bahrain’s economy, create more job opportunities, and promote sustainable development in the food production sector. It is crucial for Bahrain to take a proactive approach to food security to ensure the well-being and health of its population in the future.
