Nutcrackers, the new comedy starring Ben Stiller, is set to open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on September 5. This marks Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since 2017. The film, written by Leland Douglas, follows Mike, a straight-laced worker who must care for his four nephews after their parents’ death in a car accident. Stiller is joined by Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, and Toby Huss in the star-studded cast.

The movie showcases the chaos that ensues when Mike is forced to take care of the orphaned children in rural Ohio. After weeks of farm-life madness, Mike realizes that he doesn’t need to find a new home for the children – they have already found a home with him. Nutcrackers is set to have a red carpet premiere at Roy Thompson Hall, adding to the excitement surrounding the film’s debut at TIFF.

In addition to Nutcrackers, Toronto confirmed that Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, The Deb, will close the 2024 edition of the festival. The film follows Taylah Simpkins, played by Natalie Abbott, a farm girl and high school outcast who sees the upcoming Debutante Ball as her chance to reinvent herself. The Deb is based on a popular Australian blockbuster musical of the same name, adding to the anticipation for its premiere.

The star power of Ben Stiller and the rest of the cast, coupled with the unique storyline of Nutcrackers, has generated significant buzz around the film’s screening at TIFF. Stiller’s return to the big screen after a few years has fans eagerly awaiting his performance in this comedy. The film’s focus on family dynamics and unexpected responsibilities is sure to resonate with audiences.

Overall, the selection of Nutcrackers as the TIFF opener and The Deb as the closing film for the 2024 festival promises to offer a diverse and engaging lineup for audiences. The mix of comedy, drama, and musical elements in these two films highlights the variety of genres and storytelling styles that will be showcased at the event. Movie buffs and industry professionals alike are sure to find something to enjoy at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
