Saudi Arabia is taking significant steps towards preserving the environment, with a recent grant of $2.5 billion being allocated to the secretariat of the Middle East Green Initiative. Afforestation plays a crucial role in the Kingdom’s policy to address climate change and environmental issues, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030. Adel Al-Jubeir, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, highlighted these efforts during a dialogue session at the National Afforestation Forum in Riyadh. The forum has brought together specialists and experts from Saudi Arabia, the region, and internationally to discuss various environmental sectors.

The Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, underscore the Kingdom’s leadership in environmental conservation. These initiatives aim to share Saudi Arabia’s expertise and capabilities in areas such as the circular carbon economy, combating desertification, land rehabilitation, and tree planting to reduce carbon emissions in the region. Al-Jubeir mentioned that many countries in the region have already joined the Middle East Green Initiative, with more expressing interest in participating.

As the largest oil exporter globally, Saudi Arabia recognizes its responsibility towards the climate and is committed to being at the forefront of climate change mitigation efforts. The Kingdom aims to not only comply with international standards but also contribute to shaping these regulations. Al-Jubeir emphasized that environmental issues are interconnected, with clean air and a sustainable environment being crucial for global stability. Afforestation and land rehabilitation are essential components in addressing climate change and enhancing quality of life, as they have implications for security and stability.

Al-Jubeir highlighted the direct link between climate and various other sectors, particularly the economy. Climate-related disasters and floods can impact commodity prices, supplies, shipping, and transportation, ultimately affecting consumers. Addressing climate change is not just an environmental imperative but also an economic and security necessity. Droughts and environmental degradation can lead to conflicts and population displacement, presenting challenges that contradict Saudi Arabia’s commitment to regional security and stability.

The National Afforestation Forum in Riyadh serves as a platform for discussing the Kingdom’s efforts in climate change mitigation and environmental conservation. By fostering dialogue among experts and sharing best practices, Saudi Arabia aims to drive sustainable initiatives that benefit both the local ecosystem and the wider region. The participation of specialists from diverse backgrounds demonstrates the collaborative approach towards addressing environmental challenges and working towards a greener future. The Kingdom’s commitment to afforestation and land rehabilitation is a testament to its dedication to combatting climate change and promoting a healthy environment for all.
