Kindergarten students in Abu Dhabi are taking action to combat single-use plastics by creating handmade paper bags and distributing them to storekeepers. The initiative, led by Sunrise English Private School, aligns with the nation’s ‘Year of Sustainability’ theme and aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment. The students, with the support of their parents, are actively participating in environmental conservation efforts by creating paper bags and educating storekeepers about the importance of using eco-friendly alternatives.

The ban on single-use plastic bags in Abu Dhabi has led to a significant reduction in plastic waste, with 245 million bags left unused in 2023. The school principal, Dr. Thakur S. Mulchandani, highlights the importance of educating young learners about the negative impact of plastic and empowering them to contribute to a sustainable future. The students enthusiastically created paper bags and distributed them to nearby storekeepers, who welcomed the initiative and pledged to use the eco-friendly alternatives.

In addition to the paper bag initiative, the school has also introduced a kindergarten garden where students can connect with nature and learn about plant growth and ecosystems. Headmistress Ann Felix emphasizes the importance of nurturing a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment from a young age, aiming to cultivate eco-conscious citizens who will lead the way towards a greener future. The students’ involvement in environmental initiatives demonstrates that even the smallest actions can make a significant difference in safeguarding the planet.

The response from storekeepers in the Shabiya neighborhood, where the school is located, has been positive, with many expressing gratitude for the handmade paper bags. By informing customers about the origin of the bags, the storekeepers hope to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices. The students’ efforts to combat single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly alternatives have garnered support from the community and are contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi.

The eco-friendly drive led by the kindergarten students at Sunrise English Private School is part of a larger effort to support the government’s policy to ban single-use plastics. By actively participating in environmental conservation initiatives and promoting sustainable practices, the students are setting an example for their peers and the wider community. Through their dedication and enthusiasm, these young eco-warriors are making a positive impact on the environment and inspiring others to follow their lead in protecting planet Earth for future generations.
