Understanding Seasonal Influenza and Its Risks

The Ministry of Health and Prevention has confirmed that seasonal influenza, which can start with mild symptoms like fever, cough, fatigue, and muscle aches, has the potential to progress into a severe illness requiring hospitalization, particularly among vulnerable groups. This underscores the importance of preventive measures, including vaccination.

Vaccination has been shown to provide up to 90% protection against clinical illness in healthy adults, highlighting it as the most effective method to prevent influenza and reduce the severity of illness and the risk of hospitalization. The ministry has identified six high-risk groups for influenza complications and outlined seven preventive steps, emphasizing the safety of the flu vaccine, which has been administered to millions over more than 60 years with generally mild side effects that resolve on their own.

Influenza as a Respiratory Infection

According to the Ministry of Health and Prevention, seasonal influenza is a contagious acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses, occurring in specific seasons worldwide during winter. Influenza viruses belong to the Orthomyxoviridae family, classified into three types: A, B, and C based on their key proteins. The flu vaccine is an inactivated vaccine that contains virus particles incapable of causing the illness and is available to everyone aged six months and older at all government and private healthcare centers.

Symptoms of seasonal influenza can range from mild to severe and typically subside within a week without medical intervention; however, severe cases may require hospital treatment. Common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, cough, muscle pain, sore throat, runny nose, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly in children.

Identifying High-Risk Groups for Influenza Complications

The ministry identified six groups at higher risk for influenza infection and complications: pregnant women, children under five years old, the elderly, healthcare workers, individuals with chronic medical conditions (such as heart, lung, kidney, liver diseases, and chronic blood disorders), and those with weakened immune systems. The incubation period for influenza, which is the time from infection to the onset of symptoms, generally lasts about two days but can range from one to four days.

Influenza is transmitted directly through droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread indirectly by touching hands or surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.

Effective Precautionary Measures Against Seasonal Influenza

To mitigate the risks of seasonal influenza, the ministry has outlined seven effective preventive measures. These include vaccinating annually, practicing proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, regularly cleaning and disinfecting commonly used surfaces and objects, washing and sanitizing hands frequently, distancing oneself from others upon showing symptoms, and refraining from touching the face.

The recommendation is to receive the vaccine annually in September or early winter, before the influenza season starts. However, getting vaccinated later is still advisable, as the influenza season can extend into the following months. It generally takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to build protection, making timely vaccination crucial.

The ministry reassured that the flu vaccine is safe, having been administered to millions for over six decades. Generally, its side effects are mild and fade within a few days.

Key Facts and Statistics on Seasonal Influenza

The ministry shared that each year, seasonal influenza affects approximately 5% to 10% of adults and 20% to 30% of children globally, leading to three to five million cases of severe illness and 290,000 to 650,000 respiratory-related deaths. Most individuals recover from influenza without complications, although the disease can lead to serious, life-threatening complications, especially among the most vulnerable populations.

Research indicates that the influenza vaccine effectively reduces the severity of the illness if contracted, decreasing hospitalization rates among the elderly by 25% to 39% and overall mortality by 39% to 75%. Additionally, the flu vaccination provides 70% to 90% protection against clinical illness in healthy adults.

Health Benefits of the Influenza Vaccine

Receiving the influenza vaccine offers several health benefits, such as protecting oneself from the virus, reducing the risk of hospitalization, mitigating the severity of illness, safeguarding pregnant women during and after pregnancy, and protecting infants during their early months of life, in addition to contributing to community immunity.

As the flu season approaches, people should remain vigilant and consider getting vaccinated, particularly those in high-risk categories. Monitoring health recommendations and understanding influenza’s impact will help prepare for the upcoming influenza season effectively.
