Linda Krockenberger Transforms Her Career Through Camel Riding

Linda Krockenberger, a former revenue management executive from Germany, found a new direction in life through her unexpected connection with camels. Initially seeking a leisure activity to escape her corporate job, she ended up leaving that world behind. Following a transformative 12-day camel trek in Abu Dhabi, Krockenberger established an educational center for camel riding and care in Dubai.

Initially, Krockenberger worked her way up to the position of head of revenue at a private company. Yet, her yearning for a meaningful hobby led her to a camel riding program at the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center. Little did she know that this would alter her professional trajectory entirely.

From Corporate Life to Camel Care

The camel journey she undertook served a dual purpose: it allowed her to delve into Arab heritage while introducing her to the animals themselves. As Krockenberger spent time in the desert, she cultivated a different bond with the cultural legacy surrounding camels.

Reflecting on her experience, Krockenberger shared that interactions with camels became more than just a pastime; they transformed her lifestyle significantly. She remarked that camels possess a unique ability to resonate with human emotions, providing a sense of peace and harmony. Their reactions, she noted, mirror riders’ inner states, enriching the overall experience.

Establishment of the Desert Arab Center for Camel Riding

By January 2021, Crockenberger took her passion a step further by co-founding the Desert Arab Center for Camel Riding in Al Lisaili, along the Dubai-Al Ain Road. The center was designed to train individuals in camel riding techniques, blending traditional methods with modern approaches, focusing on animal care and Arabic hospitality.

Launching with just four camels, the center experienced significant growth, now housing 22 camels and expanding its offerings. Participants frequently transition from merely learning to owning camels, evidencing a growing community surrounding recreational camel riding.

Community and Racing Development

The center currently supports four owners who retain their camels on-site, providing the necessary care and training while easing the burden of maintaining their herds. Krockenberger believes this trend indicates that a vibrant community centered on camel riding and racing is emerging. Experienced riders are increasingly taking on greater roles in mentoring newer participants while engaging in racing programs.

Krockenberger emphasizes inclusivity, welcoming both men and women, while specifically encouraging women to participate in racing events, aimed at equipping them with essential skills in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

Expanding to Racing Competitions

The center has also branched out into hosting camel racing events. The “Single Camel Championship” has evolved from a solitary race into a broader competition featuring four categories for men, women, youth, and teams. Notably, the introduction of team competitions allows for corporate sponsorship, broadening community involvement and support for the sport.

Future Plans and Educational Programs

Krockenberger is poised to expand the center’s activities with five events planned for the 2026-2027 season. Partnering with 555 Live Experiences, they aim to enhance spectator experiences and promote camel racing among families and first-time attendees.

In light of this growth, the educational component has become increasingly significant, with outreach programs targeting schools. These initiatives aim to integrate lessons on camel care, UAE heritage, the desert environment, and human-animal relationships into school curricula, providing children with practical experiences to learn from.

Conclusion and Next Steps

The Desert Arab Center for Camel Riding is evolving beyond mere instructional activities, allowing participants to advance from learning about camels to engaging in racing and ownership. As this unique community continues to grow, it opens up avenues for diverse groups to connect with an essential aspect of Emirati culture.

With plans for further developments in educational programs and community involvement, observers can anticipate a continued increase in interest and participation in camel riding and races. As Krockenberger expands her initiatives, she remains committed to fostering a deeper appreciation for camels and their role in the UAE’s rich heritage.
