King Abdulaziz International Quran Competition Opens Finals at the Grand Mosque

The King Abdulaziz International Quran Competition opened its final qualifying rounds yesterday at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance said. The 46th edition of the King Abdulaziz International Quran Competition brought together 334 reciters and memorizers representing 133 countries under the patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman.

Sheikh Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance and supervisor general of the local and international Quran competitions, presided over the opening and noted the competition’s expanded international scope. According to ministry officials, the event marks the first time a dedicated female category is included in the finals.

Competition Scale and Participant Breakdown

Officials reported that 334 contestants are participating across five competition branches, with 202 male competitors and 132 female competitors. Furthermore, delegations from 133 countries were present, reflecting continued global interest in Quran memorization, recitation and interpretation.

Judging panels began listening to recitations immediately after the opening ceremony, carrying out evaluations in the precincts of the Grand Mosque. The ministry stated that the atmosphere combined religious reverence with strict adherence to competition rules and judging criteria.

Organization, Prizes and Historical Development

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance said it has invested in the competition’s development over the past eight years to enhance its international standing. Officials noted that the number of prize winners has risen from 12 in earlier editions to 50 in the current cycle, and that the total prize pool now totals 10,260,000 Saudi riyals.

These changes, the ministry suggested, are part of a broader strategy to support Quranic education and recognize excellence among reciters and memorizers globally. Judges are assessing technical accuracy, tajweed rules, tone and interpretation in accordance with the competition’s established categories.

Main Categories, New Female Section and Judging Process

The competition features five main branches covering memorization, recitation, and interpretation. For the first time in the event’s history, a dedicated category for female participants was held at this stage, with 132 women competing, ministry officials said.

Judging panels composed of international and local experts are conducting blind evaluations where possible and assigning scores according to international standards. Meanwhile, logistical teams coordinate schedules, transport, and the sensitive requirements of holding a major religious competition within the Grand Mosque complex.

Selection and Evaluation Standards

According to the ministry, judges evaluate contestants on memorization precision, correct application of tajweed, voice quality and interpretive clarity. The evaluation protocol aims to balance technical rigor with respect for diverse recitation traditions represented by participants from many countries.

Significance for the Kingdom and Global Quranic Engagement

Officials said the leadership’s sponsorship of the competition underscores Saudi Arabia’s role in promoting Quranic scholarship and supporting those who preserve the text. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance emphasized that the competition furthers international cultural and religious exchange by bringing together young reciters and scholars.

Furthermore, the event serves as a platform for participants to gain recognition and for smaller delegations to showcase regional recitation styles. The ministry added that enhanced prize offerings and increased winner slots are intended to encourage wider participation and investment in Quran memorization programs worldwide.

What to Watch Next

The ministry indicated that the finals will continue over the next days as judges complete assessments across all branches, with winners to be announced at the conclusion of the final rounds. Observers should watch for the official list of winners and any follow-up initiatives the ministry might launch to support the competition’s alumni and their home institutions.

In addition, stakeholders will likely monitor how the inclusion of a dedicated female category influences future participation and program development. The ministry’s longer-term plans, officials say, include further international outreach and refinement of judging standards to maintain the competition’s reputation.

Context and Forward Outlook

As the 46th King Abdulaziz International Quran Competition proceeds, the event is expected to reinforce Mecca’s role as a center for Quranic learning and to shape international networks of reciters and teachers. According to official statements, the ministry will publish detailed results and any policy changes following the conclusion of the final rounds.

Readers should look for the official results announcement and subsequent ministry briefings in the coming days, which will clarify prize distributions, the names of winners, and potential programs to support the competition’s expanding alumni community.
