Musandam Governorate, often called the “Norway of Arabia,” is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and rich maritime history. However, beyond the breathtaking fjords and rugged mountains lies a deeper cultural treasure being brought to life through the innovative Khasab tourism project, “Zaree Khasab.” This initiative isn’t just about showcasing a destination; it’s about connecting visitors with the soul of Musandam through authentic experiences and empowering its local community.

The Vision Behind Zaree Khasab: A Cultural Renaissance

Established in 2012, Zaree Khasab was born from a powerful belief: that true tourism transcends mere sightseeing and fosters genuine interaction with a place and its people. Eng. Iman Saleh Al Salti, the project owner, articulated this vision to the Oman News Agency (ONA), emphasizing the importance of experiencing the essence of a destination. Initially launched as a corporate social responsibility initiative by OMRAN Group, the project quickly evolved into a catalyst for sustainable tourism and economic growth within the region.

Empowering Women Through Skill Development

A cornerstone of Zaree Khasab’s early success was its commitment to empowering local women. The project began by providing comprehensive training programs in vital areas such as hospitality, entrepreneurship, and language skills – specifically English and Italian – recognizing the need to build capacity for participation in the growing tourism sector. This foundational work has enabled these women to become not just employees, but skilled artisans, trainers, and cultural ambassadors.

Immersive Cultural Experiences in Musandam

Zaree Khasab distinguishes itself by transforming tourists from passive observers into active participants in Omani culture. The project focuses on sensory experiences – touch, sight, and practice – allowing visitors to truly connect with the traditions and artistry of Musandam. This isn’t about simply buying a souvenir; it’s about understanding its story and the hands that created it.

Visitors can engage in a variety of activities, including traditional pottery making, intricate henna application, and the opportunity to wear authentic Omani attire. These experiences are complemented by the warm hospitality and delicious traditional cuisine of the Musandam community, offering a holistic immersion into the local way of life. The project actively promotes Musandam culture through these hands-on activities.

Ceramic Art: The Beating Heart of the Project

At the heart of Zaree Khasab, particularly at its Bassa Beach location, lies the art of ceramics. This branch of the project taps into humanity’s ancient connection with the earth, offering visitors the chance to work with clay and create their own unique artwork inspired by the surrounding landscape. The pottery wheel becomes a conduit for creativity, resulting in personalized souvenirs that embody the spirit of Musandam. This focus on artisan crafts is a key differentiator for the project.

A Sustainable Creative Economy

Zaree Khasab has successfully fostered a sustainable creative economy in Musandam. By providing training, marketing support, and a platform for sales, the project has transformed homes into miniature production workshops, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities. The women of Musandam are now recognized as professional artisans and certified trainers, contributing significantly to the region’s economic development. This model demonstrates a powerful pathway for Omani women to participate in economic and social progress.

Expanding Reach and International Recognition

The impact of Zaree Khasab extends far beyond the borders of Musandam. The project has gained international recognition, showcasing Omani culture at prestigious events like the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, the Maritime Heritage Exhibition in France, and the Zayed Heritage Festival in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the project employs licensed female tour guides, certified by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, ensuring accurate and insightful presentations of Musandam’s history and heritage.

Strategic partnerships have been crucial to Zaree Khasab’s success. OQ’s support in establishing a permanent tent at Khasab Port provides a welcoming platform for cruise ship passengers, introducing them to the cultural richness of the governorate. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has also been a steadfast supporter, consistently selecting Zaree Khasab to represent Oman at international forums.

Royal Endorsement and Future Growth

The recent visit of Her Highness the Honourable Lady Assayida Ahd Abdullah Hamed Al Busaidi, Spouse of the Sultan of Oman, to Zaree Khasab underscores the project’s importance and the nation’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity. Her Highness’s visit is a powerful endorsement of the work being done by Omani women in the creative industries and a testament to the value placed on authentic cultural experiences. This royal patronage further solidifies Khasab’s position as a leading cultural tourism destination.

Eng. Al Salti emphasized that the visit serves as a significant source of pride and confidence for the women involved, validating their work as a cultural message worthy of national esteem. Zaree Khasab is not merely a tourism project; it’s a vibrant expression of Omani heritage, a testament to the power of female empowerment, and a beacon for sustainable cultural tourism in the region. It continues to evolve, offering increasingly immersive and meaningful experiences for visitors seeking to connect with the true heart of Musandam.
