The Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, Yasser Humaidan, recently announced that the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) in Bahrain is considering the adoption of modular small nuclear reactors. The EWA is currently conducting continuous studies to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating these reactors, aligning their evaluations with global standards to ensure the safety and effectiveness of this technology. This move comes as part of the authority’s commitment to adopting best practices and advanced digital technologies in renewable energy.

In response to a question from MP Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen, Humaidan emphasized the EWA’s dedication to utilizing the latest renewable energy applications in its projects, adhering to international standards and specifications. Bahrain’s installed capacity from distributed renewable energy projects has already reached 70 megawatts, covering various sectors such as residential, commercial, and industrial. Additionally, both public and private sectors are actively working on several projects, including the expansion of the Al-Dur Renewable Energy Plant, which is expected to double Bahrain’s renewable energy capacity to 170 megawatts upon completion.

Despite the progress in renewable energy initiatives, Humaidan also highlighted some challenges faced by Bahrain, such as the need for extensive land areas for large-scale photovoltaic solar systems and wind farms. However, the EWA is actively identifying suitable open spaces for the installation of utility-scale photovoltaic energy farms, demonstrating their commitment to overcoming these obstacles. The minister also outlined several mandatory requirements for individuals and organizations looking to adopt renewable energy technologies, including technical standards for photovoltaic systems, approved materials, and a list of certified contractors and consultants.

As Bahrain continues to focus on expanding its renewable energy capacity, the EWA’s commitment to evaluating new technologies such as modular small nuclear reactors showcases their dedication to adopting innovative solutions to meet the country’s energy needs. By aligning their studies with global standards and incorporating advanced digital technologies, the EWA is ensuring that the adoption of renewable energy technologies is done sustainably and efficiently. With ongoing projects in place and plans for further expansions, Bahrain is well on its way to increasing its renewable energy capacity and reducing its reliance on traditional energy sources.

In conclusion, the Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs’ announcement regarding the EWA’s studies on modular small nuclear reactors highlights Bahrain’s commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies. By addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for growth, the EWA is laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and diversified energy sector in the country. With initiatives already in place and more projects on the horizon, Bahrain is poised to continue its journey towards a greener and more energy-independent future.
