A group of MEPs is set to travel to Texas to meet with American counterparts shortly after the US elections, regardless of whether Trump or Harris wins. The delegation of 16 MEPs will meet with 12 US Congressmen and women in Fort Worth during the 89th EU-US inter-parliamentary meeting on 8 and 9 November. The purpose of the trip is to establish initial contact with the new US regime and address potential trade tensions, particularly in light of Trump’s talk of imposing tariffs on EU goods and casting doubt on US support for Ukraine.

Italian MEP Brando Benifei, who chairs the EU delegation, emphasized the importance of defusing tensions and avoiding a trade war between the US and the EU. He stressed the negative long-term effects such a conflict would have on both sides. Another delegate, MEP Željana Zovko, expressed concerns about the impact of Trump’s trade policies on China and the potential consequences for Europe. She highlighted the EU’s efforts to diversify its trade relationships and reduce reliance on China.

In the event of Harris’ victory, discussions between the US and EU delegations will likely focus on easing trade tensions, particularly regarding aluminum and steel tariffs that have been a point of contention since 2018. The provisional agenda of the trip includes a working session on strengthening NATO’s defense capabilities and enhancing transatlantic security. The delegates will prioritize continuing support for Ukraine and addressing Trump’s threats to countries that do not meet defense spending targets.

Overall, the trip to Texas holds significant importance for both the EU and the US in establishing a dialogue and addressing key areas of concern, such as trade tensions and defense cooperation. The delegates aim to foster positive relations with the new US administration, regardless of who wins the election, and work towards resolving existing trade disputes. The delegation’s focus on defusing tensions and promoting cooperation underscores the importance of transatlantic relations in a rapidly changing global landscape.

In conclusion, the upcoming meeting between EU and US lawmakers in Texas presents a crucial opportunity to establish dialogue and address key issues facing both regions. The delegation of MEPs is determined to engage with their American counterparts and work towards solutions that benefit both the EU and the US. By prioritizing areas such as trade, defense cooperation, and support for Ukraine, the delegates aim to build upon existing partnerships and promote a collaborative approach to transatlantic relations. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the US election, the delegation remains committed to fostering positive relations and addressing common challenges in a spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding.
