Public Health Minister takes part in WHO funding round

Minister of Public Health, H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari recently participated in the World Health Organization’s investment round in Doha, where pledges of $36 million were gathered for the WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. In her address, she emphasized the importance of investing in global health, stating that it is essential for global stability, security, and prosperity. Qatar has been proactive in supporting the WHO, providing core voluntary contributions to help with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergencies.

Dr Al Kuwari expressed Qatar’s commitment to supporting the WHO’s 14th General Programme of Work, highlighting the need for ongoing, reliable, and long-term funding to strengthen global health systems. She stressed the importance of cooperation to ensure that the WHO remains prepared to lead global health efforts in the future. The Minister believes that securing sustainable funding for the WHO is not only necessary but also a moral obligation to future generations.

The investment round for the WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region demonstrates a shared commitment to the future of global health. Dr Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Organization is well-positioned to support Member States and partners in achieving shared goals. She highlighted the significant return on investment in the WHO, stating that every dollar invested generates a return of $35, which can save the lives of millions and improve access to essential health services.

The event was attended by esteemed Ministers and senior officials from countries in the region, as well as representatives from international, regional, and national organizations. Dr Al Kuwari’s address underscored Qatar’s dedication to supporting global health initiatives and its commitment to working with the WHO to strengthen health systems worldwide. The Minister believes that through cooperation and sustainable funding, a healthier and more equitable world can be created for all. In conclusion, the investment round for the WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region highlights the importance of ongoing support for global health initiatives and the critical role of the WHO in leading efforts to address health challenges worldwide.
