Reducing working hours can have a significant impact on the overall health of employees, according to medical experts. Shorter hours can lead to lower work-related stress, allowing individuals more time to relax and spend time with their families, which can greatly benefit mental well-being. The observations were made during the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative in Dubai, where work hours were reduced to seven at 15 government entities. Dr. Salman Kareem, a psychiatrist at Aster Royal Clinic, noted that shorter hours have led to improved mental health, better moods, increased job satisfaction, and improved sleep quality.

The initiative also helped in minimizing exposure to extreme heat during the hot summer months, reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Dr. Kareem highlighted that the reduced hours have allowed for more family bonding and decreased the need for external childcare services. Experts believe that more relaxation and family time can boost employee well-being and productivity, and they recommend exploring the possibility of further reducing working hours to see if it brings more benefits. They also suggest that the positive impacts of reduced hours could extend further if adopted more widely.

Dr. Marta Calatayud, a consultant ophthalmologist at Barraquer Eye Hospital in Dubai, pointed out another benefit of reduced working hours: reduced eye strain. Prolonged screen exposure can lead to digital eye strain, causing discomfort like dryness and headaches. By limiting screen time and incorporating regular breaks, individuals can minimize the risk of overworking their eyes and promote better eye health. Dr. Calatayud emphasized the importance of taking breaks, improving posture, and maintaining proper lighting conditions to reduce eye fatigue and enhance overall productivity.

Dr. Sarla Kumari, a consultant physician at Canadian Specialist Hospital, highlighted that shorter working hours can alleviate chronic health issues associated with a sedentary lifestyle, such as back pain. Employees have reported that working fewer hours enhances their physical and mental well-being, granting them more time for family activities and social engagement. A study presented during a Sharjah Executive Council meeting two years ago showed marked improvements in employee well-being and job performance after implementing a three-day weekend for government departments. Participants reported increased job performance, benefits to mental health, better work-life balance, and more time for exercise and hobbies.

Overall, reducing working hours can have a positive impact on employee well-being, productivity, and health. By providing more time for relaxation, family activities, and social engagement, employees can benefit mentally and physically. Implementing shorter working hours can also lead to improved job performance, better work-life balance, and increased loyalty and commitment from employees. Organizations can explore the possibility of reducing working hours further to enhance the overall health and productivity of their workforce.
