The World Drug Report 2023 has revealed alarming statistics indicating that approximately 275 million people worldwide have used drugs, with youth being the most significantly affected group. The report highlights the fact that drug use rates among 15-year-olds have reached unprecedented levels, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness and self-protection against drug-related dangers. In response to these concerning findings, the Advisory Board of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has been actively engaged in discussions about a strategy to protect youth from the danger of drug use and addiction in the Cooperation Council during meetings held in Muscat, Oman.

MP Dr. Hassan Eid Bukhammas, a member of the Advisory Board of the GCC, has highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination among GCC member states to tackle drug abuse and trafficking comprehensively. The strategy aims to bolster collaborative efforts among GCC countries, support preventative programs, advance research and innovation, foster international cooperation, and ensure continuous monitoring and evaluation of drug-related issues. This comprehensive approach is essential in addressing the growing problem of drug abuse among youth in the region.

Dr. Bukhammas also underscored the importance of international efforts in addressing the cross-border drug problem, as drug dealers target GCC countries due to their economic prosperity and high purchasing power. By working together with international partners, the GCC can more effectively combat drug trafficking and reduce the impact of drugs on the youth population. The strategy developed by the Advisory Board of the GCC aims to address these challenges and protect young people from the dangers of drug use and addiction.

The strategy developed by the Advisory Board of the Supreme Council of the GCC focuses on several key objectives, including enhancing cooperation and coordination among member states, supporting preventative programs, advancing research and innovation, fostering international cooperation, and ensuring continuous monitoring and evaluation of drug-related issues. By implementing these objectives, the GCC can more effectively address the root causes of drug abuse and provide support for youth who may be at risk of addiction.

Overall, the alarming statistics from the World Drug Report 2023 highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and action to protect youth from the dangers of drug use and addiction. The strategy developed by the Advisory Board of the GCC addresses these challenges head-on by promoting cooperation among member states, supporting preventative programs, and fostering international partnerships to combat drug trafficking. By working together, the GCC can create a comprehensive framework for addressing drug-related issues and safeguarding the well-being of young people in the region.
