Spicejet Airlines has been placed under ‘enhanced surveillance’ by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in New Delhi. The decision comes after reports of flight cancellations and financial stress being experienced by the airline. A special audit of Spicejet’s engineering facilities was conducted on August 7 and August 8, 2024, which revealed certain deficiencies. The airline was allowed to release aircraft for operations only after confirming that all reported defects had been rectified. In light of past occurrences reported on the Spicejet fleet in 2022, the DGCA has decided to increase spot checks and night surveillance to ensure the safety of operations.

This is not the first time Spicejet has been placed under enhanced surveillance. In 2023, the airline was also under financial stress and faced similar scrutiny from the DGCA. The recent special audit conducted in August 2024 has raised concerns about the airline’s operations and maintenance practices. Spicejet passengers were recently unable to check-in for their flights at Dubai airport due to delayed payments. The airline spokesperson cited ‘operational reasons’ for the cancellation of flights from Dubai, stating that affected passengers were accommodated on subsequent flights, on other airlines, or provided with a full refund.

The decision to place Spicejet under enhanced surveillance comes as a means to ensure the safety and security of its operations. The DGCA will increase the number of spot checks and conduct night surveillance to monitor the airline closely. This move is essential in light of the deficiencies identified in the recent audit. It is crucial for airlines to maintain high standards of safety and maintenance to ensure the protection of passengers and crew. Enhanced surveillance will help address any issues and rectify them promptly to prevent any potential risks to flight operations.

Spicejet’s reputation has been impacted by the recent reports of flight cancellations and financial stress. It is important for the airline to address these issues promptly and work towards improving its operations and maintenance practices. Enhanced surveillance by the DGCA will serve as a measure to ensure that the airline complies with safety regulations and maintains the required standards. This will also help rebuild trust and confidence among passengers and stakeholders in Spicejet’s services.

In response to the situation, Spicejet has assured that all scheduled flights from Dubai are now operating as planned. The airline is working to resolve any operational issues and minimize disruptions for passengers. It is essential for Spicejet to maintain transparency and communication with passengers during such challenging times. By addressing the concerns raised by the DGCA and implementing necessary measures, Spicejet can improve its operations and regain the trust of its customers. Enhanced surveillance will serve as a proactive step towards ensuring the safety and efficiency of the airline’s operations in the future.
