The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a knife attack in Solingen, Germany that left three people dead and eight others wounded. The group stated that the attacker was seeking revenge for Muslims in Palestine and other areas, and deliberately targeted Christians in the attack. German police have arrested two individuals in connection with the stabbings, one of whom was a 15-year-old with prior knowledge of the attacks. The search for the main perpetrator is ongoing.

Authorities have not yet identified a motive for the attack, but are not ruling out the possibility of terrorism. The victims of the attack were two men aged 67 and 56, as well as a 56-year-old woman. The attacker reportedly aimed for their throats during the rampage. Police are conducting searches and investigations across North Rhine Westphalia in an effort to gather evidence and witness testimonies to piece together the events of the attack.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned the attack, stating that the perpetrator must be caught swiftly and brought to justice. The city of Solingen was hosting a ‘Festival of Diversity’ to celebrate its 650th anniversary, but the event was called off following the incident. The attacker struck shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time in downtown Solingen, where residents alerted police to the indiscriminate stabbings.

Solingen is a city with around 160,000 residents located near Cologne and Düsseldorf. The police are facing a significant challenge in investigating the attack and gathering evidence to identify the motive behind the violence. Chancellor Scholz expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the need for the attacker to face the full force of the law. The city of Solingen is left in shock following the tragedy, with authorities and residents alike seeking answers and justice in the aftermath of the attack.
