The Ministry of Education in Muscat has taken a significant step in continuing the teaching of French and German as elective subjects in grades 11-12 in some schools across various governorates. Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibaniyah, the Minister of Education, issued Ministerial Resolution No. 192/2024, which revoked Ministerial Resolutions No. 389/2011 and 129/2022 related to the formation of a committee for the teaching of these languages. This decision reflects the ministry’s commitment to expanding the teaching of foreign languages, including Chinese, in the coming years. The formation of a Foreign Languages Curricula Section within the Directorate-General of Curriculum Development will now oversee these efforts, taking over the responsibilities previously held by the now-cancelled committee.

By continuing the teaching of French and German as elective subjects, the Ministry of Education is promoting a more diverse and comprehensive language education for students in Muscat, North Al Batinah, and South Al Batinah. The decision to expand the teaching of foreign languages aligns with global trends towards multilingualism and the importance of language skills in a competitive job market. Additionally, the establishment of the Foreign Languages Curricula Section within the Ministry demonstrates a firm commitment to enhancing language education and preparing students for a globalized world. This move will not only benefit students who choose to study these languages but also contribute to a more inclusive and culturally aware society overall.

The cancellation of the previous ministerial resolutions and the transfer of responsibilities to the new department signals a shift towards a more streamlined and efficient approach to language education. With the establishment of a dedicated section for foreign languages within the curriculum development department, the Ministry of Education is better equipped to address the evolving language education needs of students. By centralizing the preparation, implementation, and follow-up of language teaching under one department, the ministry aims to improve coordination and collaboration across different educational initiatives. This strategic move is a positive step towards enhancing the overall quality of language education in Muscat and surrounding governorates.

In addition to the continued teaching of French and German, the Ministry of Education’s decision to include Chinese as a potential language offering highlights a forward-thinking approach to language education. As China continues to play a prominent role in global affairs, proficiency in Chinese language and culture can open up a wealth of opportunities for students in Oman. By introducing Chinese as a potential language option, the Ministry of Education is ensuring that students are well-equipped to communicate and engage with diverse global communities. This strategic shift towards offering a wider range of language options reflects a commitment to providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.

Overall, the Ministry of Education’s decision to continue the teaching of French and German, as well as introduce Chinese as a potential language offering, demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing language education in Oman. By revoking previous resolutions and establishing a dedicated section for foreign languages, the ministry is paving the way for a more comprehensive and inclusive language curriculum. This strategic move not only benefits individual students who wish to study these languages but also contributes to a more culturally aware and globally competitive society. As the Ministry of Education continues to evolve its language education initiatives, students in Muscat and surrounding governorates can look forward to a more diverse and enriching educational experience that prepares them for success in an interconnected world.
