Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) recently launched new livelihood projects in Iraqi Kurdistan to support internally displaced people (IDPs), refugees, and the host community. These projects aim to provide a stable source of income for families in need. In cooperation with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), a project was implemented in Erbil to assist 169 poor families. The project included the distribution of cargo motor tricycles to help beneficiaries overcome financial difficulties and earn a living.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent officials, including the Vice General Consul of Qatar in Erbil and the Governor of Erbil. The President of BCF and the head of IRCS’s Erbil chapter were also present. This collaborative effort reflects a commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting economic stability in the region. The project’s first phase focused on providing practical tools and resources to empower families to generate income and improve their quality of life.

In addition to providing motor tricycles to families in need, the project also included a training program for widows and divorced women. Fifty women received sewing and embroidery training, as well as sewing machines and tools to start their own businesses. This initiative not only supports economic empowerment but also promotes skill development and entrepreneurship among women in the community. By equipping women with the necessary resources, they can pursue sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.

Another aspect of the project involved a workshop in Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, where Syrian refugees and locals received training to reduce poverty and unemployment rates. The workshop aimed to help families and widows secure a permanent source of income, meet their living expenses, and reduce their dependency on humanitarian aid. By empowering individuals to become self-sufficient, the project indirectly contributes to reducing school dropout rates and improving overall health conditions in the community.

The collaboration between QRCS, IRCS, and BCF demonstrates a coordinated approach to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in Iraqi Kurdistan. By providing practical tools, resources, and training opportunities, these organizations are working together to promote economic stability and empower individuals to create sustainable livelihoods. The launch of these new livelihood projects highlights the importance of supporting marginalized communities and investing in initiatives that have a lasting impact on individuals and families in need. Through strategic partnerships and targeted interventions, it is possible to create positive change and foster economic development in conflict-affected regions like Iraqi Kurdistan.
