Inter Miami CF, the defending champion of the Leagues Cup, secured a 2-0 victory over Mexico’s Puebla in their opening match without star player Lionel Messi. Matias Rojas from Paraguay scored the opening goal in the ninth minute, followed by Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez adding an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, sealing the win for Inter Miami. Messi was sidelined due to a left ankle injury sustained during the Copa America final. Despite his absence, Inter Miami put on a strong performance in their quest to defend their title.

The Leagues Cup tournament features MLS clubs and Mexico’s Liga MX teams competing in a World Cup-style format with three-team groups, with the top two advancing to the knockout rounds. The excitement of the tournament was evident in other group openers, with teams such as Atlas, New England, Philadelphia, and Toronto securing victories. New England’s US midfielder Jack Panayotou and Philadelphia’s Israeli striker Tai Baribo were among the players who made significant contributions to their team’s success.

Despite missing Messi’s presence on the field, Inter Miami demonstrated their strength and resilience in securing a convincing victory over Puebla. The absence of the Argentine star did not deter the team from showcasing their attacking prowess, with players like Rojas and Suarez stepping up to lead the team to victory. The win in the opening match sets the tone for Inter Miami’s campaign to defend their Leagues Cup title and proves that they are a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
