UAE: Cold callers concerned about targets and salaries due to new regulations

The UAE government has announced tighter regulations on telemarketing via phone calls, with fines of up to Dh150,000, starting from mid-August 2024. The regulations aim to crack down on the intrusive and persistent behavior of cold callers who often call at inappropriate times and refuse to take no for an answer. Violators will face gradual administrative penalties, ranging from warnings to fines, suspension of activity, license cancellation, and removal from the commercial registry. Several UAE residents have expressed relief at the news, as they have experienced harassment from cold callers in the past.

For Mohammed A, a Sri Lankan expat working as a telemarketer in Dubai, the new regulations are cause for concern. He worries about meeting his targets and facing penalties if he fails to sell a certain number of cards per month. Mohammed, who used to run a gemstone business in Sri Lanka before facing setbacks, took up the telemarketing job in Dubai to repay debts and support his family. Despite his worries, Mohammed remains hopeful that he can adapt to the new rules and continue to meet his targets.

On the other hand, Indian expat Aneesh, who owns a direct sales agency servicing leading banks in the UAE, sees the new regulations as a challenge. He believes that the rules will make the situation more difficult for his agency, as landline conversion rates have already dropped significantly. Aneesh predicts that the agency will have to resort to traditional selling methods such as face-to-face visits and reliance on references to generate business, which could impact revenues severely.

Some cold calling agents, like Judy, a Syrian expat working for a financial training center, face additional challenges in their work. Judy often encounters abuse and inappropriate behavior from recipients of her marketing calls, including expletive words and unwanted advances. While she follows the timing stipulated by the government for making calls, Judy finds that male colleagues do not face the same level of harassment and misconduct from potential clients.

In conclusion, the new regulations on telemarketing in the UAE aim to protect consumers from intrusive and persistent cold calling practices. While these rules may pose challenges for telemarketers and direct sales agencies, the ultimate goal is to create a more respectful and regulated environment for marketing and sales activities. As individuals and companies adapt to the new requirements, it is important to prioritize ethics and professionalism in their communication with potential clients to ensure a positive and compliant business environment.
