Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, celebrated the 126th Philippine Independence Day by lighting up in the colors of the Philippine flag – blue, red, and white. The display honored the day the Philippines declared freedom from over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. Last year, both Burj Khalifa and the Adnoc building in Abu Dhabi also lit up in Filipino colors to commemorate the spirit and resilience of the Filipino people. The UAE is home to over 700,000 Filipinos, making it one of the largest expat communities in the country.

Michael da Costa, Philippine Business Council (PBC) director for media and communications, expressed gratitude for the UAE’s love for the Filipino community, stating that it makes them feel welcome and inspired to strive for excellence. Filipino Social Club president Ericson Reyes also expressed gratitude for the UAE’s welcoming nature and recognition of the importance of the Filipino community in nation-building. The celebrations extended to a two-day festival at the Dubai World Trade Centre, where over 10,000 Filipinos gathered for cultural performances and presentations showcasing Filipino heritage.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UAE and the Philippines, further solidifying the bond between the two nations. The Filipino community in the UAE continues to contribute positively to the country’s growth and development, with their presence being valued and celebrated. As the Filipino expat community in the UAE continues to grow, the strong ties between the two nations are further strengthened through cultural exchanges and shared celebrations.

The UAE’s display of solidarity and support for the Filipino community during events like Philippine Independence Day showcases the country’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The vibrant cultural performances and celebrations highlight the rich heritage of the Filipino people, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among the community. As the festival at the Dubai World Trade Centre demonstrated, the Filipino community in the UAE comes together to celebrate their culture and history while also embracing the welcoming nature of their host country.

The lighting up of iconic structures like Burj Khalifa in the colors of the Philippine flag serves as a symbol of unity and friendship between the UAE and the Philippines. It signifies the strong bond between the two nations, recognizing the contributions and value of the Filipino community in the UAE. As both countries continue to strengthen their diplomatic relations and foster cultural exchanges, the celebrations of Philippine Independence Day in the UAE serve as a testament to the enduring friendship and partnership between the two nations. The Filipino community in the UAE plays a vital role in the country’s multicultural society, contributing to its diversity and prosperity.
