Doha, Qatar – Motorists traveling in the Zekreet area should prepare for temporary road closures this week as the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) undertakes essential infrastructure improvements. The entrance to Zekreet Street from the Rabiah bin Eissa Al Kuwari intersection will be closed in both directions during the early hours of Friday and Saturday, January 9th and 10th, 2026, to facilitate the installation of new speed bumps. This temporary disruption aims to enhance road safety for residents and visitors alike.

Impact on Commuters & Local TrafficWhy are Speed Bumps Being Installed?

The closure will specifically affect traffic joining Zekreet Street from the Ashghal-managed Rabiah bin Eissa Al Kuwari intersection. These works are part of Qatar’s ongoing efforts to improve its road network and prioritize pedestrian safety, particularly in areas experiencing increased traffic or a history of speed-related incidents. Ashghal routinely implements such measures across the country.

Understanding the Zekreet Street Closure and Detour Routes

Ashghal announced the specific detour routes for affected drivers. Those approaching from the Rabiah Bin Eissa Al Kuwari Intersection will be directed to utilize Jery Al Samur street as an alternative. This redirection allows for continued access to the Zekreet area while the work is completed.

Drivers coming from the south, according to Ashghal’s statement, should proceed towards Jery Bu Awseja Street. From there, they will need to turn left onto Rawdat Shabhana Street and then make another left onto Jery Bu Areesh Street to reach their intended destinations. These detour routes are designed to minimize disruption and maintain the flow of traffic as much as possible.

Impact on Commuters & Local Traffic

The timing of the closure – during the early hours of Friday and Saturday – suggests an attempt to mitigate impact on peak commuting times. However, residents and those traveling to recreational areas in and around Zekreet should anticipate potential delays and plan their journeys accordingly. Alternative routes may experience increased traffic volume.

Zekreet is a popular destination due to its unique landscape, including the Easting and Westing sculptures. The installation of speed bumps aims to protect both pedestrians and wildlife in this sensitive area. Additionally, the improved safety measures could benefit tourist activities in the region.

Why are Speed Bumps Being Installed?

While Ashghal did not specify the exact reasons for the speed bump installation, they generally contribute to reduced vehicle speeds, especially in residential areas, near schools, and along roads with pedestrian activity. Local reports have indicated an increase in traffic volume in Zekreet in recent years, leading to concerns about road safety.

The implementation of traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps, is a common practice in urban planning to create safer environments for all road users. Qatar has been increasingly focused on improving its road safety record, investing in both infrastructure improvements and public awareness campaigns. These measures are aligned with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, prioritizing sustainable development and quality of life.

The installation of these speed bumps represents a proactive step towards addressing potential hazards and ensuring the well-being of the community. These improvements are vital for the increasing number of visitors to the area, drawn by its scenic beauty and cultural attractions. This work also contributes to efforts to reinforce traffic management principles across Doha and surrounding areas.

Following the completion of the speed bump installation on January 10th, Ashghal is expected to reopen Zekreet Street at the Rabiah bin Eissa Al Kuwari intersection. The full removal of construction barriers and a return to normal traffic flow may take several hours after the scheduled completion time. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant and check for updated traffic information from Ashghal’s official channels before traveling. Further road improvements in the region are likely, given Qatar’s continued infrastructure development.
