Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s path to NATO membership in an interview with Euronews. He stated that Europe and the West must not under-supply Ukraine in its efforts to defend against Russia, and that there should be no doubt about allowing Ukraine to join the NATO alliance. Kasčiūnas highlighted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “victory plan,” which includes NATO membership as a key objective. He stressed that Ukraine, which fights for its independence and the security of others, deserves the right to choose its future alliances for the benefit of future generations.

Kasčiūnas expressed Lithuania’s firm support for Ukraine’s invitation into NATO, stating that it is critical not to signal to Russia that they have any form of veto power over NATO enlargement. He emphasized that extending an invitation to Ukraine is a point of no return and irreversible, representing a significant strategic move. While Ukraine was promised a “bridge to membership” at NATO’s 75th anniversary summit, the US clarified that this is a long-term goal rather than a guarantee. Kasčiūnas argued against those who fear supporting Ukraine may provoke Russia, pointing out that providing weapons to Ukraine for deterrence is crucial to deterring Russia’s aggression.

The Lithuanian Defence Minister highlighted the importance of lessons learned from past failures to adequately support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He recalled how some voices advised against providing weapons to Ukraine for fear of escalating the situation, but ended up not providing enough support. Kasčiūnas emphasized that doing nothing in the face of Russian aggression is itself escalatory, and that it is a mistake to assume that support for Ukraine will escalate the situation. He urged Western leaders to acknowledge their mistakes and to better understand the importance of supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty and security.

Kasčiūnas stressed the need for a proactive approach in supporting Ukraine, rather than a reactive one. He emphasized that strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities through increased weapon supplies will serve as a deterrent to Russian aggression, rather than escalating the conflict as some may fear. By providing Ukraine with the necessary support, Kasčiūnas believes that Russia will be deterred and the security of both Ukraine and Europe will be enhanced. He urged Western leaders to learn from past mistakes and to take decisive action in supporting Ukraine’s path to NATO membership, highlighting the importance of standing by Ukraine in its quest for self-determination and security.

In conclusion, Kasčiūnas reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for Ukraine’s invitation into NATO and stressed the irreversible nature of extending such an invitation. He emphasized the need for Europe and the West to stand united in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defend against Russian aggression and to secure its future through NATO membership. Kasčiūnas urged Western leaders to learn from past mistakes and to take a proactive approach in providing Ukraine with the support it needs to deter Russian aggression and safeguard regional security. By standing firm in their commitment to Ukraine, Kasčiūnas believes that Europe and the West can send a clear message of solidarity and support, while deterring further aggression from Russia.
