The Democratic candidate has emerged victorious in the New York presidential race, securing the state’s 28 Electoral College votes. Vice President Kamala Harris clinched the win on Tuesday, adding to the streak of Democratic victories in the state since 1984. In the past, former President Donald Trump struggled to gain support in New York, losing in all three of his presidential campaigns. Despite the consistent Democratic wins, the margin of victory was narrower this time compared to previous elections.

New York’s Electoral College votes are the fourth highest in the country, following California, Texas, and Florida. However, due to population changes, the state now has one less vote than it did in the past. The Associated Press officially declared Harris as the winner in New York in the early hours of the morning. In addition to the presidential race, New Yorkers also voted to approve an amendment that expands the state constitution’s antidiscrimination language to protect the civil rights of individuals seeking or having had abortions.

This victory in New York adds to the Democratic Party’s momentum in the 2024 presidential race. The state’s support for Democrats dates back to 1984, when Republican President Ronald Reagan secured a landslide victory. Since then, New York has consistently voted blue in presidential contests. Former President Donald Trump, a New York native, faced difficulties in winning over voters in his home state, losing in all three of his White House bids. Despite the historical Democratic wins, this recent victory had a smaller margin compared to previous elections.

With its rich Electoral College votes, New York plays a crucial role in shaping the outcome of presidential elections. Although it ranks fourth in the number of electoral votes, the state’s influence is significant in determining the overall winner. The recent amendment approved by New Yorkers further showcases the state’s commitment to protecting civil rights, particularly for individuals involved in abortion-related matters. The combination of the Democratic victory and the amendment approval highlights New York’s progressive stance on key social issues.

The Associated Press announcement of Harris’s win in New York marks a significant milestone in the presidential race. The early morning declaration solidifies the Democratic candidate’s success in securing a crucial East Coast state. Despite facing challenges in previous elections, the Democratic Party’s strong showing in New York reaffirms the state’s commitment to Democratic ideals and policies. Moreover, the approval of the amendment demonstrates New Yorkers’ support for expanding civil rights protections, particularly in areas related to abortion. Collectively, these outcomes signal a promising start for the Democratic candidate as the race progresses towards the general election.
