Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has once again reiterated his anti-immigrant stance, claiming that migration has a corrosive effect on EU legislation. Orbán made these remarks at the Cernobbio Forum in Italy, stating that migration will disintegrate the European Union and calling for new laws to stem its flow. He emphasized that migration is an existential issue facing the EU, along with gender, employment, and security. Orbán criticized Germany’s more generous asylum policy and highlighted Hungary’s approach to illegal migration, stating, “We never let them in.”

In addition to Orbán’s statements, a senior Hungarian official, State Secretary Bence Rétvári, has expressed the government’s plan to provide asylum seekers with free one-way travel to Brussels. Rétvári claimed that the EU wanted to force Hungary to allow illegal migrants across its borders and announced that Hungary would offer them free transportation to Brussels. This provocative proposal was made in response to a ruling by the European Court of Justice, ordering Hungary to pay fines for breaking the bloc’s asylum rules. The EU has frozen funds for Hungary over breaches of rule-of-law and democracy standards, leading to potential conflicts with Brussels.

Orbán’s government has faced criticism and sanctions from the EU for its handling of migration and asylum policies. The country’s strict measures, including constructing fences protected by razor wire on its borders, have been condemned by EU lawmakers. Hungary has been fined for violating EU asylum rules and has been urged to align its policies with European standards. Orbán’s government has resisted these demands, leading to tensions with the EU and calls for Hungary to be stripped of its voting rights in the EU Commission.

The Hungarian government, under Orbán’s leadership, has taken a hardline stance on immigration, criticizing the EU’s migration policies. Orbán has referred to migrants as “poison” and has advocated for stricter border controls to prevent the entry of illegal migrants. The government’s refusal to comply with EU regulations has led to fines and sanctions, further straining relations between Hungary and the EU. The ongoing conflict between Hungary and the EU over migration policies reflects a broader debate within the bloc on how to address the challenges posed by migration.

Despite facing pressure from the EU to change its migration policies, Orbán’s government has remained defiant in its stance on immigration. The government’s refusal to accept migrants and its controversial proposals for transporting asylum seekers to Brussels have sparked criticism and concern within the EU. The conflict between Hungary and the EU highlights the broader political divisions within the bloc over migration, rule-of-law, and democracy. As tensions continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how the Hungarian government will navigate its relationship with the EU and address the challenges posed by migration.
