European elections in Italy are approaching, and a recent poll by Euronews indicates that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party is likely to secure the most votes. The party’s support has remained stable at 28%, with the centre-left Democratic Party and the populist Five Star Movement following closely behind. Both of these parties have seen slight increases in support compared to the previous month. On the other hand, right-wing rivals Lega and Forza Italia are predicted to receive just under 8% of the vote.

PM Meloni has been leading her party’s election campaign with the goal of achieving high voter turnout to secure as many seats as possible in the EU Parliament. Her party is part of the European Conservatives and Reformers group, and her strategy aims to influence the formation of future coalitions, particularly with the European People’s Party. However, Meloni faces obstacles within her own country, including competition with Matteo Salvini and the strengthening of left-leaning forces.

Salvini, a powerful figure in the European Parliament, poses a challenge to Meloni’s ambitions of forming alliances with the European People’s Party. Additionally, the left in Italy, represented by the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, could potentially join forces to create a solid structure in the country’s political arena. This could present a significant hurdle for Meloni and her attempts to establish a grand centre-right coalition in Italy.

Despite these challenges, Meloni remains focused on securing a strong position in the EU Parliament elections. Her party’s consistent support in the polls indicates a solid foundation on which to build, and her campaign efforts are aimed at maximizing voter turnout to secure a significant number of seats. By aligning with the European Conservatives and Reformers group, Meloni hopes to have a strong influence on the formation of future coalitions at the European level, in line with her goal of establishing a grand centre-right coalition.

As the European elections draw closer, the political landscape in Italy is becoming increasingly competitive. While Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party currently holds a strong position in the polls, the rise in support for other parties, such as the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, presents a challenge. Meloni’s strategy of focusing on high voter turnout and forming alliances with the European People’s Party is a key part of her plan to influence the future direction of European politics. However, with obstacles both within Italy and at the European level, Meloni will need to navigate carefully to achieve her goals.
